on the earliest /20 and I believe /21(have to look that up) 1 was incorporated in the main shaft. Sometime in '95 they began the incorporation of 1 & 2 in the main shaft. To change those gears you need to replace the main shaft and if you think separate ger sets are expensive wait till you see the cost for a main shaft.

This has to be the most under-appreciated and largest most reliable performance improvement for the 993....why does this box even exist to tempt me.....

Thanks Bill .... I think my misguided idea for an easy DIY has been 'mainshafted' : the +ve side is that the std 1st gear is feeling better already ....

IMO..: the G50/31 is a superb box for the SERIOUS enthusiast. However as mentioned, the first gear is long and when coupled with LWF plus moving off from a gentle hill in traffic could become an embarrassment. (stalling)

Ex wife hated to drive the car in traffic but loved the smiles she got on the road. (she was a VG driver)

I agree with Monique in that the LWF makes the car harder to drive in traffic. You really have to pay attention to what you're doing to get going from a stop. My car is a blast to drive with the current setup. I don't think I could ever go back to a stock gearbox. I can only echo the sentiments made by others (Bill, Steve W., Mark, etc.) and say that this is the signle best mod to a 993 to increase performance. My buddy can't keep up with me in his new Boxster S unless we are on very tight roads that don't allow me to wind it out. He is sold on the close ratios and he isn't even a 993 owner.

I installed the gearbox myself so it didn't cost me as much as some. It's sad to see these parts becoming so rare and expensive as Porsche slowly stops supporting the older models.

I'm not having any issues at all with the LWF and /31 in traffic, etc....but I am in the land of flatness (Florida-no hills). Thoroughly enjoying my new gearing! :-)

Monique and Leland you beat me to it, however, I pray for one of the /31 every night. Still less than the 3.8 conversion but a much more cost efficient solution for immediate performance in the 993. I'd also have to change my driving habits to avoid the hilly stops in San Diego.

RS Clubsport parts are being bolted on today at Victory Racing Paints here in San Diego.

w/ a 3.8 the long first isn't an issue, even w/ a 3.6 it's not much of one.

I think Steve Weiner is now able to get MUCH better pricing than you or I thru his connections....still pricey, but well below 14k or 11k with core exchange.

Thanks for the info! You could smell that I'm "aching" for one couldnt you? The flames coming off my checkbook to Steve Weiner just had some gasoline poured on it. He makes it too easy to do business with him.

The MSRP on a remanufactured /31 box (950-300-020-NX) is $7514.53USD + core exchange ($2500ish?). The MSRP for the /32 gearbox (950-300-020-QX) is $11423.42USD + core exchange (obviously available for thousands less from the mail-order Porsche dealerships). And if at all possible, before you spend this kind of money for a 993 that doesn't live its entire life on a track that you find someone that has already done this upgrade with a similar mods to yours and do an acceleration test with both cars.
