I'd recommend looking for a 993TT. But I am a bit prejudiced.

There is nothing that obligates you at $51,999. You could try something less if you wanted.

I think 52k is a decent price for a 996TT you could wait maybe couple months it might go down to 40k more or less.

Robert is exactly correct. If you want this car, start a negotiation on the phone. I didn't look at the auction... where is the car located? Ask a Rennlister to pop over and look at the car... today! If that checks out (and he can inspect the title docs also) then spring for the PPI. 996TT is a great car. One other issue is the cooling system and coolant tanks... prone to cracking. I prefer the 993TT, but the 996TT can me modified for crazy HP. Good luck!

<edit> I just looked at the auction... the car is in Long Beach... don't you live near there? Why are you still here reading this forum... get your *** down there NOW!

If you are going to own a 996, this seems like a good choice. Like you said you can sell the '99 996.

These are fast and good handling cars...they blow past me on the track!

Go for it...if it checks out. There has been some good advice on the things to look for on a PPI. If it is a scam, is the guy in Long Beach or just the car?

Cheers!

Car is in Long Beach, seller just e-mailed back history, 1 owner car purchased from Riverside Porsche all service done at the dealer. He would be willing to take the car to PPI and allow me to back out if something don't spell right from the PPI.

A side note, regarding the price of the 996 TT dropping to mid 40s. Someone else had just mention that to me, so don't know if there is any truth to that. Is the market extremely soft on the 996 turbos?

Thanks for all the advise, I guess now it is time for me to do some thinking

That is correct. The reason your bid went to $51,999 was because the sellers shill bidder over bid you. I would back the price down to where it was before the high bidder drove up your bid. Look at the bid history.
Good luck on a great price,
Jim

Why do you want to get involved in what is an obvious scam? The guy is shill bidding on a
$52k car? He needs to be in jail and you are well advised to run the other way. Arent there
good cars available from sellers who are honest?

I have bought and sold on Ebay since 99' and have 100% postive feedback on over 300 transactions.

I have bought and sold cars, rolex watches etc. If you know what you are doing and are careful Ebay is a perfect place to bring buyers and sells together. You have no idea how hard Ebay works to stay ahead of crooks. Regarding shill bidding. Ebay knows your IP address. Even if you use a different account, different computer, etc., and your bids are coming from the same IP address they shut your account(s) off immediately.

Yep there are tons of scams on Ebay, but it doesn't take long to figure them out and deal with reputable buyers and sells.

quite a bit of experience on ebay.
"Even if you use a different account, different computer, etc., and your bids are coming from the same IP address they shut your account(s) off immediately."
Have to disagree with you on that Mark.

I checked the bid history on the auction, and the bidder's identitys are private so u cant tell when the "shill" bidder started, but there is a jump of $2K from 50 to 52K. I think its a "shill" bid personally. even if it is a BS bid, it doesnt necessarily mean that the guy is a scammer or selling a lemon. 52K might still be a good price. I would offer him 50K firm

His feedback history looks OK. He's been around for a while on ebay too...

check out the car, do ppi, and offer what u want to pay.

Just for reference I paid $58K w/CPO from dealer in december for my 03 X-50 TT with 62K miles one local owner. It has NAV and a few other extras and full dealer records. $142K list. I would think $49-50K would be reasonable. There are a lot of them out there and are not holding value very good. It comes down to whats it worth to you to drive a very fun and able car that has the maintenance and reliability of a Toyota.

After a little bit of research, which was using Galves.com where I have a subscription, I think the wholesale value is somewhere in the low 40s on this car. It has quite a lot more mileage on it than average. If you were going to hold onto it for a while I guess high 40s is OK. If you're not so sure how long you'll keep it, mid-40s is where I'd want to be. I think the 996s will continue to depreciate for a while.
