Default Typical exhaust tip issue

I have the issue where the driver side exhaust tip is flush, but the passenger tip sticks out at the correct length. I've read here the tips can't be adjusted, but there are two other hangers or bolts which can be loosened to give the exhaust room to move. Can somebody point out which bolts they are (or put an "X" in the general area for me?) Sorry if it is a stupid newbie question. I love doing the maintenance, I just want to be sure of what I'm doing. Picture is stolen from an ebay auction...

I remember that issue when I looked at that car - I'd look at the muffler hanger to see if it's positioned correctly, or check to see if the pipe leaving the muffler is kinked or bent (indicitive of having been backed into a solid object).

I had the same problem. Turned out to be a warped bumper cover. Had the bumper refinished about a year later, now the tips line up perfectly. Have you even bottomed out the rear of the car on a low driveway?

I don't think it has been bumped into or bottomed out, I don't see any scratches which I think would also have to be there. When the 2nd owner got the car he also noticed it and asked if it can be fixed (at 34K), now it has 46k. Looks like it is time to go buy two more jack stands and get under the car.

Thanks for the offer gordo. Are there ever St. Louis meets? I have seen about 5-6 people who appear to be active on here and didn't know if y'all get together occasionally.

Absolutely!! You need to join the St. Louis Region of the Porsche Club of America to get all the secret information about driving events, etc.

I ran into this problem before when remounting my exhaust. Loosen the muffler-to-cat clamp. Then loosen the muffer hanger band clap itself. You should then be able to pivot/rotate/adjust the tip to stick out more. Of course, after the adjustment, your tip may be at an odd angle. Just loosen the muffer tip clamp and readjust.

The bumper cover or skirt in the back has a metal edge running the length of it. Mine was a little out of wack too - but you can fix it. As I recall, you actually have to unbolt the metal piece, then gently bend it into shape and re-bolt the whole thing.

Mine are cockeyed, too, but it's only a reflection of the driver. Call it character!

Thanks all. I'll give it a shot. I think that it is going to be the metal bar in the back of the bumper. Not to mention my bumper support bars by the wheel wells are all rusted through, but they'll be fixed next week.

Maybe one thing to check which was alluded to earlier - last time I removed the Bischoff mufflers on my 95 I couldn't get them to line back up. I removed the bolt holding the band around the muffler itself and noticed that on the back of each muffler is a small "hook" that goes over the top of the structure that the muffler band clamp wraps around. It took loosening the bolts into the muffler and some elbow grease to shift it around - now they are back in alignment.

The bolt and clamp assembly that holds on the tip can may need to be reversed or repositioned so the bolt doesn't hit the body of the car as well.

Good luck.

PS - If I wasn't entirely clear, I was saying that the hook on the back of the muffler was not going over the structure where the band clamp mounts. There is not a lot of play for the muffler once this hook is on there.
