I think that statement was referring to a std. non aero996. And Jim, you car looks badass!

I was just at Robins house on Sunday talking about his 993 vs. 996. He really likes the 996 for many reasons. Because of their recent retail values, they seem to be a good value.

Just to be clear, if I didn't know Mark from both the track and online I wouldn't have taken the shot back at him. I was just jerking his chain. I think a stock 993 looks much better than a stock 996. Personally I like an aero 996 better than any 993 but that's just a matter of taste.

I'm attaching one of my favorite racing pictures. It's my old rival and I in our last race together. His is the beautiful "real" 993RSCS. Mine is a 99 996 chassis converted to a 2004 3.6l X51. We ended up 5-5 so maybe it was a good time to move on. The 996 is not just a little faster than the 993. A n/a 3.6L 996 is a very good match for the RSCS or the mighty 993TT.

Tx911 - FUNNY

Chris - Robin told me once that the 996 is a fast car, but lacks the road feel of his 993. I personally think his red 993 looks FAB compared to the 996, but then again Im partial.... I know at the time the 996 was the M-F car..

Speaking of Robin where is he? He must be living in his garage keeping his new LR on the road I wonder if his family recognizes him anymore.

Since I think the 993 is a perfect everyday car, but I am starting to feel the lack of traction from the slippery slope, I'll be looking at a 3.3 Turbo in the not so distant future. Next up will be a fat butt 911S.

But first I need some real estate to store them !

My first Porsche was a 964, I sold that and bought the 993. Sold that and went Porsche-less for a couple of years, now I have a 996 cab ('02). I love it. It has less "character" than the 993 (which had less than the 964) but does everything else better.

There are lots of 996's for sale because Porsche sold more of them. They sold more of them than the 993 because the market likes them. Every car depreciates except for low mileage examples of exotics. Pristine low mileage 993s have hit a plateau in pricing because of their unique "last real Porsche" reputation, but that doesn't make them an intrinsically better car.

I realize that writing that is blasphemy on this board, but I can live with that.

As to the question (and I own a 993 RS clone that my wife and I track), the 996 is simply a better car in every way (aside from the open question of the engine going "pop" from time to time). As to considering NA v. GT3 v. turbos, they are all very different. I think turbos make poor track cars, I think GT3s are a LOT of car, and would strongly caution you not to get one.

Get a 996, run it, have a ball, and learn your craft. Then, once you have moved up three or four run groups, if you want more, get a GT3. Meanwhile, their cost will continue to drop and you will lose no money, net, on the transaction.

Jim,

When I posted last night, I knew you'd come out of the woodwork. I think you search for "993 versus 996" every day!

Your car looks cool with the wheels and aerokit but, as a 2004, it wasn't one of the early ones ('99 to ??) with the headlights from the Boxster.

Good luck with your cup car.

Hmmm.......the 996 is a great car to own for a few years but the market has passed judgement on value over time and the numbers do not lie.

Mark,
It's embarssing I know but as a former owner I still drop by the 993 forum from time to time. It's not my fault you guys always have a 996 bashing going. I think maybe it's my job to bring a little reality into the 993 dream world.

Actually everything on my car is a 99 except the lights, fenders and bumper cover. I had to update them when I put the 3.6L in. Maybe I just got lucky but I've owned it since it was new in 99 and it's been a fantastic car. It still is.

Have a great day. I'm sure I'll see you sometime soon.

The numbers have little to do with whether or not which is a better car and a LOT to do with how many cars are available. I am not disputing appearance, just driving.

This is like comparing a cordless phone with an old-school dialer made with brass fittings.

The cordless wins on performance but is it still a plastic piece of crap and the market prices it accordingly.

Hell, I could sell my 1998 and buy TWO 996 models....but they both would fall apart before the 993 did......while at the same time depreciating twice as fast.

Both of my Cayenne Turbos were the same...great performance but who wants to risk keeping it outside of warranty.

I think I will pass.

I think the problem it's easy to solve: just sell the 4s and buy a GT3.
