Attn Wallmart Shopers (Mobil 1 15-50)
Reading on the board that people still only find the SM extended formula Mobil 1 15-50. I though I would let you know guys I just bought the new formulation Mobil 1 15-50 at the Wallmart in Renton WA. So if that wallmart has it, I guess you should be on the look out at your local store. This is the SM/SL rated, gray cap Mobil 1 which looks to be the old or comparable formulation. The label and the look of the bottle is also identical to the good old red cap SM Mobil 1. While I cant do a chemical analysis, I had an old SL Mobil 1 half quart in my garage and I compared the 2. The thickness and color looks identical Needless to say that I raided the store and got all the quarts they had on the self! You should have seen the look of the checkout girl
Now I'm ready for my oil change

I saw some "new" stiuff at Walmart too. Don't trust it until/unless I know what is in it, and Mobil 1 will not say. And they can change it at any time, without me knowing... but maybe my race engine will know and not like it!
I'm using Redline.

I just went to Costco and bought the "NEW" Mobile 1 15W-50 which states API SM,SL/CF- its interesting to to note that it states "extra protection for severe service such as towning,l hauling and racing.
My left over old Mobile 1 15W-50 Extended Performance API SL/CF - states" Excludes severe service application involving racing and frequent towing and hauling"
So at least it seems on the face value that this is even better than the old Extended SL version of 15-50. per Mobile 1's description on the bottles.
Thanks for the heads up to all that the new formula is around - that got me off my butt to look for it and now I can do my oil change
BTW it was 29.99 for 6 quarts

Bad news, but the non-EP stuff, at least for Ph and Zn, appears to be the same as EP SM rated oil

He also reported that there night be a difference as much as 20% between the labs and he was going to retest the samples. To be honest I find it difficult to believe that Mobil would misrepresent their product openly. In the bottles it clearly states that the new formulation has more additives than the EP formula.
Having said that nothing is impossible, my take on this is that the consistency and thickness of the oil also count on our engines, so I will not experiment anymore with any other oils. While the study is great there are no scientific data or empirical data to suggest that the present levels of zinc and phosporous are not sufficient on our engines. On the other hand empirical data from various experienced mechanics have shown that the oil consistency and thickness can lead to issues with our 993 engines. So till someone can prove that the Mobil 1 15-50 latest formulation zinc and ph levels are harmful to my engines, then I'm sticking with it.
