I see these things for sale in a lot of regular car parts stores. Any idea if ours are available this way?

Performance Products used to sell the Weltmeister (sp?), they probably still do. Those made a big diff on my '88 911.

OK my struts are toast in the rear.....I use 1" ID white tubing to hold the rear lid up when I have my head in there......The struts look a bit** to change out....are they easier than they look???

Not so bad, but:

Make sure the engine is COLD
Have a little mirror-on-a-stick for when you drop a clip
Have a magnet on a stick for when you use the mirror-on-a-stick
Use a spray cleaner to clean the area where your arms will be rubbing since your arms will become the cleaning device if the area is dirty

Other than that, it is easy. You really get in touch with doing a job by 'touch' BTW

Can't speak for the front ones on a 993.

Mike.....My front is ok....its my rear that I have a problem with......Doctor, when I lift it up in the air to look inside it wont stay up and drops on anybodies head that is in there.....the only way to stop it is to stick a broom handle or plastic pipe in there ... then its safe to put your head inside!!!!

I guess the ones we want are the Weltmeister aftermarket struts from Performance Products. Their website shows the front bonnet struts but not the rear lid. I have an email out to them now and will post what i find....

I do know there is a signifcant difference between the cab/targa rear hood shock and the front shocks. Geeze, i can't remember which ones are stronger...I do remember getting a new set on my car and the hood would almost fly open when I hit the latch. It was dangerous. I guess the lesson is to make sure you get the right ones for your car.

They are not hard but its a bit finicky getting the rear pin/latch in. Its easy to drop the pin or clip and then its hunting time. I would use a clean cloth (like a bedsheet) and stuff it under where you are working so it you do drop anything, its caught in the cloth and easy to find. I know, I lost one pin and had to replace it ; I only found it later when I dropped the engine and was doing my rebuild...it had somehow gotten underneath the varioram manifold and out of sight.

Cheers,

Mike

I ordered mine through Pelican Part. When I bought my car about a month ago, both front and rear struct are shot, so I changed it. I think the front is very easy to change, the right rear is also pretty easy, but the left rear is PITA to me so I decide to leave the left rear alone since the right shock can easily hold the engine lid without any problem.

The rear decklid shocks for a cab are shorter such that they dont push the decklid into cab top boot.
