Question Changed my engine decklid lift pistons, STAND BACK!

Changed the lift pistons on the rear decklid last night. Holy Cow! what a
difference! The lid opens all the way up when the latch is popped, sheesh!
If someone was standing there it would wack them right in the chin. Seems
like there is a little too much lift now. The new ones in front would do the
same thing if it weren't for the safety catch.

Did you use standard struts from Porsche or some other, supercharged variant?

I had mine replaced a few days after buying the car. They keep the lid up, but are in no way capable of lifting the lid on their own.

The ones in front were supposed to be Weltmeister but they looked like
OEM replacements. The rears were supposed to be straight OEM replacements
and they appear to be, they are Meistersatz brand.

Thank you. Where did you find the struts?

Both pairs were ordered from Performance Products.

LOL. I remember that when I replaced mine. It seemed like a small cat napping on the rear edge of the wing could be flung over the entire car. It beat holding the deck lid open with a paint stirrer.

I put away my two custom cut pieces of pvc pipe a few weeks ago, but my new struts won't open the lids themselves.

Be carefull between the coupe struts and the cab struts. They are different...I know because I got the wrong ones and the coupe struts would toss the rear lid up with substantial force on my Targa (which is a cab..)...I removed them quickly since I would not want that much force on opening and replaced them with the proper shock and the rear deck works perfectly now. If you open the rear lid you just get the nice click and the deck lid is partially open. The front is the same way with new shocks, very easy to open but does not fly open.

Maybe you got the Turbo ones!!

Cheers,

Mike

Yeah, my car has the chin hitter struts in the back. Kinda freaky the first time the PO opened it to show me the engine.

My car is a coupe (avatar). The length appeared to be the same
as the old units. Isn't there a length difference between the coupe and the
cab/targa units?

Here we go:

P/N for the coupe strut : 911 512 331 01
P/N for the Cab/Targa : 993 512 121 00

I could not tell the difference from the outside but I think the power is opposite of what I think. I mistakenly ordered the coupe strut for my Targa and had to really muscle them in...and the lid would take my face off it I opened it. I took those off and put the Cab/Targa openers on...worked correctly. I then gave the coupe struts to another rennlister who installed them and his lid opened fine. I think the rear mount points are a bit closer together for the cab/targa.

THe problem is that this opposite of what you are seeing, you should be getting a softer opening if you get the wrong stut. I know that Performance etc. used to sell a really strong strut in case you had a large tail on your wing...on my 911 SC years ago I got a pair from them and ended up using one strut since the damn things were so strong two would rip the lid off.

Anyways that's all I know. Do you have the part number for the strut?

Cheers,

Mike

Mine did that initially, but they calmed down after a while.

Default RS Tail

Already replaced my hood and trunk struts, all 4 were shot when I got the car so this was one of the first little projects. They both open/hold well with no drama.

Will be fitting an RS wing later and wondered if I need to use different struts due to the addtional weight?

I did mine last year and had the same experience. I could use the spoiler to launch snowballs out of my garage to guard the fort! (just kidding...). I used the correct replacement parts AFAIK. A year later they have settled down to where it no longer flings the spoiler open but just a touch of help sends them on their way.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I feel better knowing that I'm not the only
one who has experienced this phenomenon.
