PROBLEM : Car stopped indicating yesterday (out of the blue). (Never happened before...just stopped)

1. Left and Right Indicators don't work
2. The brights and flash to pass (same stalk / switch) works perfectly
3. If I "indicate" then make a turn, the swicth goes back to neutral position
4. When I hit the hazzards - all the lights come one - so its not the lights
5. Checked as many fuses as seemed logical (sometimes these things aren't) - all good there

Question 1 : Is it my indicator switch that is bad
Question 2 : Does anyone have an extra indicator column they wouldnt mind giving up?

Hmmm? Any wire that may have worn away/come loos related to the indicator stalk? The fact that the hazard switch operates the indicators says that the bulbs are fine, the flasher unit is OK(is the just one or does the hazard use another flasher unit?) and the fuses are probably OK so that leaves the indicator stalk. I would start there.

And since both the L & R don't work it's probably a wire going into the switch that would be supplying common power to both sides.

 

Is there a turn signal relay on these cars?
On "other" cars this was usually found under the dash somwhere.

According to Adrian's book:

Fault= No indicators left or right functioning.

DIY diagnosis and repair= (1) Relay R32 failed or (2) Internal failure within steering column stalk assembly.

I'd look at the relay first.

 

I have that book...and didn;t think to look at it. Where is Relay R32 located? in the fuse box? (don't have the book or car in front of me right now) thx

 

The fuse box lid in the trunk will describe the location of this relay. Good luck!

 

I'm not sure of the location. The photo of the main fuse block in Adrian's book shows R31, R33, and R34 but does not show R32. Indicator relays are usually located under the dash...(That's what makes the clicking noise when you push the stalk up or down). Since I can hear my relay clicking when I make a turn, I assume it's under the dash. I'll check tomorrow and let you know unless you indicate otherwise.

The indicator relay is located immediately under the VIN plate in the lower (driver's) left corner of the windshield. Rather than being under the dash, it is accessed via the luggeage compartment. If you look behind the left front bonnet strut, you can see two relays sitting right together (See photos below). There is a shorter one with white print on it and a taller one with yellow printing on it.

I believe the one with yellow print is the turn indicator relay but they are so close together that both feel like they are "clicking" when I turn the indicator on.

This may sound strange but before I went to the trouble to remove the relay, I'd tap the relay lightly with the handle of a long screwdriver. Sometimes the points on relays stick and a sharp rap will break them loose temporarily, which may give you enough time to purchase a new relay.

I had difficulty getting my hand back to the relay and it looks as if you may need to take the bonnet strut loose at the top and move it over in order to reach in and grasp the relay.

+1 on Terry's advice to give it a "love tap"... put turn signal on first, see if you get a flash or two.
Sometimes it will even start working for a while for the reason Terry described.

just an update..... in case anyone else has this problem.... do a simple check.... pull out the console section where the hazard switch is and make sure the connector for the hazzard switch did not come loose.... somehow, that is what happened in my case, and just snapped the sucker together and BLINKERS / INDICATORS WORK AGAIN!!!!
