Good choice moving from the 3.2 L to the 993. I sold my '86 with 40 K miles to move to the 993 and am absolutely delighted with the move. First of all, the 993 has a much nicer transmission. More power which you'll feel right away and a better heating/A/C system (just a few differences). I really liked the classic 911 styling of my '86 Cab, but my C4 cab is a much nicer all around car. Good luck!

Default Nope!

Got caught in traffic on the way to his house and just made it in time for dinner. I'm seeing him again for New Years so will give it another shot (weather permitting). I did sit in it though in his garage. I forgot how luxurious these cars have become. Still, very impressive.

Finally drove the 997. Here are my impressions:

1. Very quick!
2. It is so different from my 3.2 that it may as well be made my another manufacturer.
3. It feels more Japanese than German. I also have a late model Audi so I know how newer German cars feel. The 997 feels like a very fast Lexus (putting on my flame retardant suit!)
4. It really feels like a luxury car, not a sports car.
5. It is idiot proof. I was taking tight turns at pretty fast speeds and the car wouldn't budge. No body roll at all. It was at night and the car has only 1000 miles so I didn't get to ridiculous speeds.
6. After leaving the car, I felt a little disappointed. I think it would make an excellent daily driver, but it lacks the excitement and raw driving feel of the older Carreras. I now see why many people who "upgrade" to a newer Porsche don't sell the older one. They will never make cars like this again.
7. I want to drive a 993. It would appear to be the perfect compromise between the two.

Well, I'm not completely surprised by your experience. Nor will I argue, since I've only driven a 996, not a 997. I wonder this: How many 2007 model cars really feel like a true sports car? I don't know the answer to this. I guess the only way is to test drive them myself.

Huh? So you actually want body roll in a sports car? Me thinks you had a tainted view of your drive.

Yeah, body roll does not a good sports car make. My 997 doesn't lean much, but I take this to be a good thing and a sign of a more sporting pedigree. I'll leave the good ship Leaningpops to minivans and Corollas.

When I stated, "no body roll" I was merely reporting my experience. Of course, I don't think a sports car should roll! Oh, and the fact that's its real quick was a turnoff as well!

Bottom line: Its an incredible automobile, but l like the feel of the older ones. Maybe as I age I'll want more creature comforts in my sports car, but as long as I have a couple cars in my garage I want my sports car a little on the raw side. That being said, I haven't yet driven a 993 and I'd like to see where in the spectrum that falls.

I believe that a little body roll can be a good thing, especially if your are a serious Auto-Xr or an everyday driver. Very low speed 90 deg turns (especially off camber) like the car to shift a bit more weight to the outside wheel, which can be accomplished by running a smaller rear sway bar or a bigger front one, inducing a bit of roll and bite in the rear.

Maybe that's why Porsche installed 21mm front & 18mm rear in our US 993's.

If the set up is stiffly sprung, with huge sway bars & perfectly cornered balanced, it will turn as flat as a pancake making guys like me rejoice, but there are always some who will find the ride too harsh for everyday driving or even Auto-Xing.

To me, it's a matter of how you use the car and what is comfortable!

From "Porsche. There is no substitute." to "Porsche. The 911 may as well have been made by another manufacturer."
