Default Question re electric mirrors

Just bought a black 993tt - a wild beast!! As yet too frightened to really drive so am just fixing a few things and having a good look at it. Have I really bought this car ----- Yes!!!!

Now, can anyone help me repair the electric mirror which moves up and down but not side to side. I've removed the mirror from the door but I need to get behind the glass to see what's happened. A small screw is exposed when the mirror is swivelled but I'm reluctant to undo it. The electrics work as I can hear the motor- but no movement.Appreciate any help.

Firstly, congrats on your beast! ...and welcome to Rennlist!
Need pics!

The small allen headed fastener under the small rubber plug is what you need to remove. Actually, just remove the rubber plug, then loose (generously) the allen bolt and the mirror will fall into your hands, if memory serves.

Thanks Chris, I have removed the mirror from the door but how do you get the mirror and assembly apart?

On the bottom of your mirror housing there is small opening that you can fit a flat-head screwdriver through (red arrow).

Use the screwdriver to push the attachment gear on the back of the mirror glass (bottom of the next photo)

and then pull the glass away from the mirror housing.

Thanks Jason, do you simply push the attachment gear with the screwdriver in the same plane as the mirror? Many thanks will try tonight.

I went thru all the above, removed the mirror motor...hooked it up to a power supply and the effing thing worked!
When I mentioned it to my Porsche mechanic he said that the supply wires often broke on the A post where they pass from front wing to door. It can happen either side. May I suggest that you identify the particular colour coded cable (either white or brown trace I think) and probe carefully with a multimeter and sharp pin through the cables at various points as they track across the car. Eventually you will find the point where the power disappears. Probably only one cable has fractured. I had the same problem with the driver's seat lifting mechanism and just before buying a new lift motor..discovered a broken wire in the loom under the seat. Brittle cables!

Peter is right on the mark. My passenger mirror would (will) go in and out but not up and down. Because I didn't have the guildence of Peter, I replaced the inter working of the mirror. Same same. I have yet to find the problem wire.

Chuck, if you remove the door capping on the afflicted side you can expose the multi-way plug that serves the heated mirrors (two browns) and pair of power wires to each motor. By earthing one side of a multimeter on the chassis and putting a fine needle into the croc clip on the other side of the multi, you can ***** each of the cables firstly from the driver's door switch, in the footwell (either side of the car) and finally at the ultimate connector next to the faulty mirror. By jiggling the joystick button on the mirror control you can reverse the polarity of the supply cables so you will always get a reaction from the meter if there is power. Its not possible to short anything. WITHOUT PREJUDICE!
