Default Storage / Battery / Door Lock Problem - Help

Hi guys,

It is that time of year here in the North, no not the Holidays, time for storage. So here is my dilemma. I am storing the car in a garage just outside of Chicago. The car needs to be locked as people go in and out of that garage. Yet reading the owner's manual as well as the below thread you are deterred from using the door locks.

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforu...eferrerid=24909

So the battery needs to remain connected. I went last night to take it out for a drive as the weather cooperated and it barely started. If I disconnect the battery to preserve it then I can only lock it manually, clearly not advisable. A battery tender is a possible solution, but no easy access to a plug in this garage. Short of going to start it every week or two I do not see a easy solution. Anybody have any suggestions? Is my logic correct?

Lastly, What if the battery dies and the doors do not unlock?

I assume I pop the cap off the lock, open the door, pop the boot, charge the battery and then what??? I need a code for the immobilizer to start?

Fit a battery on/off switch with a removable handle- lock it manually and stick a steering locking device onto the steering wheel.

Another alternative is a secret switch and relay wired into the ignition.

I don't quite see where a battery disconnect would be any diff. solution to just disconnecting the neg. term. My suggestion would be to just disconnect the neg. term., lock/unlock the car using the door keyhole and buy one of the portable battery/jumpstart units.

I could not access the thread you linked to so have no idea why the door key is not a good idea. If you need to leave the battery connected get a port. battery jumper.

I've winter-stored my 993 in Minneapolis over several years. My procedure:

1. Fill the tank completely. I'd also add a bottle of "Stabil" if the car's going to be sitting for longer than 6 months.
2. Wash and vacuum the car.
3. Put down plastic film on the cement garage floor under the car as a vapor barrier.
3. Inflate the tires to 45 psi. They will have flat spots in the Spring from sitting which work themselves out with slow driving.
4. Disconnect the battery. The electronics will drain it if not on a maintainer and it will freeze solid.
5. Leave the windows cracked a half inch or so.
6. Manually lock the driver's side door.
7. Put a porous cover over your car to prevent garage rash.

When the battery's reconnected you do not have to enter an immobilizer code...but the radio wil have to be recoded.

I would agree w/ everything above except #1, I've seen gas get mighty gummy after just 2 mos., I would add the Sta-bil no matter what.

My solution for winter storage of my 993 in Saint Paul (this is my first year trying this method):

(1) Start car each morning. Drive child to school. Continue on to work.
(2) Go for a drive over lunch along the River Road.
(3) Drive home after work, perhaps stopping on some errands.
(4) Park car in garage overnight.
(5) Repeat each day until spring.
