interesting view. i value your opinion, as you have owned both. what i don't quite understand is what you mean by "poseur" performance out of the 911. in fact...what the hell are you talking about, mate? "doors blown off"? the vette is a mighty machine, no doubt about it. but the car just doesn't do well when compared with other- in this case, a 911, sports cars. period. drag racing doesn't count. 0-60 times don't mean much more. the stock 993 motors vs. stock c5 zo6 cars at our track lap about the same. the vette power pulls away on the straights, while the 911 eats all that up, and more, in the bends. further, the stock chevys can't run for more than 15 minutes without temp issues.

your experience with the build and overall quality of your vette is wonderful. i'm just not convinced your experience is all that common. perhaps your not as picky as some. personally, i'm not impressed with how they wear.

i don't mean to stray off-topic. i'm just responding to the above quote. i know it's not a vette bashing thread- as much as i do enjoy participating in those.

I'm with Traffic.

Even though it's 10 to 12 years old, a 993 is far from a poseur (though I believe this word was used in jest by Sway)

It is not a drag car, never meant to be. It's wonderful total package, particularly on a track, especialy a shorter one where hp isn't a trump card.

That said, there is no better value performance-wise than a Z06.

I think he's referring to how slowly a 993 accellerates on the street in real world conditions.

i see. i just don't think that the 993 is slow on the street in real world conditions. when are you ever full throttle on the way to work? and even if- is the 993's full throttle not enough to get you to the next stop light in a resonable amount of time? i do see what you are saying, i just haven't read too many folks complain about 993 street performance.

I agree with Mike and as much as the Europeans in general are more refined cars, the Z06 to be taken very seriously as for about $65K you get a car that posts a 7.42.90 at the Nurburgring. I think we can all agree that the Nordscleife is a pretty good indication of a car's overall ability.

Are you saying that a C5 and up Corvette does not do well against a 911/993 on the track? The only street '911' that can keep up with a C5 Z06 on the track is a 996 GT3 (..all else being equal). Now that's a fast street '911' (..and a great car!), but a NA 993 is not in the same class as a 996 GT3 performance-wise.

Since when? That's where the majority of 'races' occur since I'd have to guess that 97% of Porsche owners do not track their car which leaves the stop lights as their only form of racing. Just about every Porsche owner I know engages in street-racing/drag-racing from a traffic-light, to the posted speed limit from time-to-time depending upon their mood and 'competition'.

the stock 993 motors vs. stock c5 zo6 cars at our track lap about the same. the vette power pulls away on the straights, while the 911 eats all that up, and more, in the bends.
The only NA street 911 that can stay with a C5 Z06 in a straight line is a 996 GT3. If a 993 'eats all that up' in the corners, then it's because a better driver is in the 993 versus the driver in the Z. It's not because of the hardware; the Z06 is a better all-out handling platform than the 993. Just look at Z's Nurburgring time of 7:56.x; that's smokin' fast, and that's on the stock tires too.

your experience with the build and overall quality of your vette is wonderful. i'm just not convinced your experience is all that common. perhaps your not as picky as some.
I know of roughly 8 other C5's, and every one of them are in impeccable condition, just like mine.

personally, i'm not impressed with how they wear.
Personally, I'm not impressed with anything you have to say about Corvettes as your views are the polar opposite of my experiences with many C5's, which makes one question your sincerity on the topic.

further, the stock chevys can't run for more than 15 minutes without temp issues.
I did install an engine oil-cooler which kept the oil at 245 - 250, and had no coolers on the 6-speed which never over-heated on the long, fast RA track.

How on earth did this conversation descend into a comparison of a brand new sports car to a car made almost ten years ago? Seems apples and oranges to me. There are SUVs today that would probably outperform Vettes from the early 90s. If you like early 90s Vettes, so what? They were good performance bargains then as now. Same applies to older Porsches. Compared to their contemporaries they were outstanding as examples of performance and build quality.

Thanks It does have a Leda suspension, which helps.

This is such a silly argument. The Z06 and the 993 couldn't be more different cars. Makes about as much sense as comparing 993s to STIs and EVOs. If you insist on taking your stock 993 to the track, why would you get bent out of shape when more track suitable cars are faster? If you insist on taking your stock 993 to the strip, why would you get bent out of shape when more drag racing suitable cars are faster?

If your goal in life is beating Z06s around a track, why not just jump in a Radical or Lotus 7 replica and drive circles around them for half the price?
