Diff noise - diagnosis needed :(
Hi,
My 96 C2 6spd is making a whining "gear-like" sounding noise when I turn left and am off the throttle. It doesn't make the noise when I am turning right when on or off the throttle. It definately sounds like its coming from the left rear. I don't think its a wheel bearing since my 928 had one go bad and I know what they sound like. The option codes for my car do not indicate that I have a LSD. The car has about 75K miles. No rubbing of tire is evident. It really sounds like a gear whining. Is this easily remedied by new diff oil or topping it off (I hope so)? Anyone know what this may be?

If you can get it up on a hoist ( or otherwise securely elevated), I'd be tempted to start with the usual pulling/tugging/spinning of the hub and driveshaft --- doing a 'feel' for movement & noise.
Follow that by starting it up - and in gear, use a stethoscope/ wood dowel/vac. hose in the ear to listen to everything from the diff to the outer stub axle.
Hopefully, that may narrow the search.

Garth,
I did lift it and spin the hubs (both sides). Also tried grabbing outter edges of each wheel looking for play/movement. I only had a floor jack so I didn't try running the car while lifted and using a steth. All seems well from the motor off out of gear spinning of the wheels. No strange noises. Maybe someone else has experienced a similar noise issue and found a different source? I did a search and it seems that most of the occurances of a similar noise were hub related. That doesn't seem to be it for my car.

That is a well and good...
but it is sort of like when you find you have low brake fluid. Even the chaps at the Change Your Oil stores will not add brake fluid. They want you to find the leak.
If my power steeering fluid were low, I'd want to know why. There must ba a leak somewhere. I don't recall any words from my 993 owners manual suggesting I top off the power steering fluid. In fact, now that you bring up the topic, I don't even know where the resevoir is!!!

Investigate the leak as Martin says. If the pump were to run dry it will quickly lunch itself and they are lots of $$$. Check the rack for fluid leaks at the bellows ends as the seals are a common failure point and fill the bellows with Power Steering fluid.
