Default Tyre advice

I am replacing all my tyres next week, having searched the archives Michelin Pilot Sport N1 tyres seem to be favorable, I have three questions.

1 I currently have 205/50 17 on the front on original 7" wide cup wheels

Can I fit 225 wide tyres on 7" wheels 225/45 17 ?

2 Would Michelin Pilot Sport N2 tyres be as good as the N1s?

3 What is the concensus on what is the best all round (UK weather remember) 17" tyre for a C4 993 ?

2- Porsche and Michelin jointly recommend pilot sport N2's for 17" and ribbed N1's for 18", and SX MXX3 N2 for 16"

I switched to the 225 width using stock cup 17 wheels without a problem. Car was lowered to RS height. Great tires all around - I have heard some complain about wet weather but I found them predictable - I'm sure you know they are strictly classified as summer tires.

Thanks guys,

Perhaps I should be asking "what tyres are your running?, what sizes? and how good?

Anyone ?

It's very hard to get any kind of consensus from the past posts.

Hi David,

I run Michelin Pilot Sports; you can check sizes, etc when we see you next week.

Cheers,

David

Hi David

I hope to get some put on before the weekend, as my current tyres are the ones that came with the car and are of different makes and pretty low on tread.

Do you have PS N2s ?

I can't remember and I've just dropped my car off at the garage for a week for its annual service. They the recommneded ones for 17" and look like old school grooved wet/dry tyres. They put the w style tread on the back by mistake and I had to use them for a week - they were so noisy on the road and didn't feel right but when the proper ones went on they were much quieter and felts a whole lot better.

Cheers,

David

Be careful on worn tires, especially rear. any moisture at all on the road and you will know what I'm talking about.

Jean-Pierre, I had read your previous posts on the subject and had discounted them as I think the way Pirelli treated you was terrible (what comes around goes around) so they won't be getting my money.

FO3 I know exactly what you mean , hence the urgency in getting them changed.

I have just read an interesting thread on pistonheads about Costco (UK) being really well priced on tyres, so I off to local branch in Birmingham to check them out.

I swapped out my 205 fronts for a set of 225s recently and have been very pleased with the change and decrease in understeer. I went with the Bridgestone S03s which are not available now. But you can get the new RE050A that replaced them which should be as good or better. I've been very happy with the Bridgestone and even though they are a summer max performance tire found them very capable this morning in the snow and freezing weather. Good luck.

FWIW... I have a bro who was a tire buyer for a large trade org.

He owns an NSX. He tried every high perf tire available to him on his car. His hands down recommendation for street legal tires is Bridgestone:

1. Build quality is very consistent.
2. They require few if any weights if the wheel itself is well balanced.
3. Lowest return rate of all the manufacturers.
4. Very good performance ... very good dry and quite good wet and wears well.

In my case, the next set will be either the newest combi street/track Dunlops or Bstones.

David,
I would give Micheldever Tyres, Micheldever a call . They have been a benchmark for price for years . With four tires going on it may be worth the trip .
Last time round I went to Goodyear . Much better price and good performance .

Good luck

I've gone through about 10 sets of rears, and the best experience I've had are with the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup. I think the car came with Dunlop sport 9000's, then switched to Brigdestones that were supposed to have better wet traction (spun out and crashed), and now the Michelins.
