Quite interesting what Bruce says, as when my friends ask what sort of mileage I get I say "well, if you drive it really hard, it uses loads of fuel, if you drive it gently,err... it uses loads of fuel!" and I find that's true.

I know it's not the kind of car you buy for its fuel economy, but it's a shame its a 16- 20 mpg job, as in the Uk today there is so much "save the planet" talk and taxes, that vehicles such as the 993 are hard to justify, even though for a 3.6 litre it's pretty fuel efficient.

I traveled to an event at Putnam park I live in TN so it was about 350 miles. On the way up and on the way down I got 27 MPG. That s 80 in 6th most of the time with a few stints into 3 digits. I rarely downshift to get there.
At teh track I got 8.7MPG. Calculated by resettign the OBC. I must say I did worm up a bit at the track so maybe it was not that bad, definetely nut more than 11.
It was either brake or WOT. God I loved the bad fuel economy.

I must have a problem. I city drive-it all tank-full and only get 13-15mpg. I have done the unthinkable and kept my foot out for a whole tank and was able to get close to 20mpg (again all city).

I have taken one road trip (business) to AL, and was amazed when I got 25-28 mpg.

I don't get how some of you get low/mid 20s with a mix of city/highway?

Me too. I'm just having way too much fun getting 20 or 21 mpg! When I really try to stay out of the throttle I can get 26 or so.

Now I'm nervous. How the heck did I get 28? 420 miles, 15 gallons, 28 mpg. Sounds like an unusually frugal Porsche I've got here...

Maybe it knows about all the doctor bills and is trying in its own way to help out...

Maybe one of your buddies is sneaking in a gallon or two of gas while you're sleeping? BTW my 103HP Scion xA gets a very consistant 32 mpg in combined city, highway driving.

One thing no one has mentioned that might explain some of the larger differences from car to car is mileage on your clock. Can't this partially explain it?? How many miles does it take to fully break in an engine?

This is another thing I have never paid attention to-gas milage. If I were to guess, I would say an average of 18mpg. There is no way in hell I would get 28mpg. Maybe on cruise control driving across a South Dakota interstate going 55 with the wind behind me.

Thad,
I'm assuming you calculated by zeroing trip od, then filling up, driving 420 miles, then refilling? Is it possible your car was on an incline when you filled up the second time, there by your fuel tank not being to the same level as it was the first time?

I would try to get two more data points to confirm. If you get the same, it would be intresting to get details on your gearing, i.e. tach reading at 60 mph in 2nd gear. That might be a good easy refference for everyone.

On a 1200km(750mi) trip on the French highways, diving most of the time at 130km/h(80mi/hr) with cruise control, I saw 25.3mpg on my OBC. On the other end, during a DE at F1 Francorchamps track, I saw 6.9mpg!!
Average is around 16mpg for my "normal" use. Mileage is about 77000mi.

Just an update, my mileage was more like 23 mpg the tankful after the one where I got 28 (I was driving more normally)... then the weather got worse (temps below freezing, wet roads, etc) and now I'm getting like, 19 mpg. Which is more normal, I guess. I think the 28 was just an odd combination of factors and conditions that isn't likely to happen very often.

My engine tray is ON.

Man! You must be on the throttle! You must really like 8,000 RPM a lot, too!

My best trip mileage for the GT3 was 28.7 mpg on the highway.
Around town it is about 15 mpg!

My 993's best highway was just over 30 mpg. I never calculated mixed driving.

Here is a little secret that will help you get better mileage!

Your 993 also has a 6th gear.
