28 mpg!
I average around 18 mpg in mixed driving at 4-6000' above sea level. My best was 27 mpg on the highway and my worst was 14.6 for the spirited spints in the local twisties.
Both of my 993's are Tips... a '95 Cab and '96 Targa... 99% of my driving is on the streets and I consistantly get 13.8 - 15 mpg on either car..... My '02 4Runner gets about 21 combined.....
So, Any theories as to why the big variation in Mileage? State of tune, driving style and percentage mix of Highway vs City would obviously account for some, but how much? I would expect to see variations on the order of about 20-30%, but these variations posted here seem huge to me.
To me, is sure feels like the car has a harder time pushing down the highway when we're in the middle of a rain squall. Ever tried to run in a pool? Might be the same type of resistance to tires trying to push through water. When it's raining my milage drops a lot and I'm driving slower because it can get pretty hairy around here when it rains... I've not checked milage in a while but I certainly get fewer miles on the trip meter between fills when there is water about.
The "Spec" or book mileage for the 993 is 17/25 mpg city/highway.
So mid 20's is doable. I don't see how you can do better than the sticker, but I suppose it can be done. However like FSCCA said why have a 993 to drive 55 mph.

Holy smokes, I don't know how ANYone gets better than low 20's unless you're going under seventy with the cruise control on. I drive 80 miles round trip every single day (75% freeway) and get a VERY consistent 19.5 mpg.
Get the lead out and step on it folks!

I almost always get around 22mpg UK (US=18) in the 993 exactly the same as my 964. My driving is mainly half motorway speed (60 - 90) and half b-road blasts (20 - XXX).
The best mpg in a 911 was 28mpg (23 US) on a blast back from the Nurburgring in my 964, all at speeds between 90 and 110,
With each tank of V-Power costing around £60 ($115), you tend to keep half an eye on the economy as it’s a major part of the running costs, even for a 911.
The best mpg ever was on a touring holiday to Scotland where I achieved 38mpg (32 US) in my 2.0 VW Corrado and I wasn’t even trying. Once I went past 500 miles on that tank, I thought the car had learned to run on air.

Never pay attention to gas prices or gas milage.
I dont drive a whole lot for work because most of my business is conducted over video conferencing right out of my house. I speak with customers and conduct meetings on a daily basis over video. I do travel to meet customers from time to time.
Good old working out of the house life!!!

I have never gotten over 24mpg on a 100% frwy trip. I average right at 19/20 for my trips which are usually 50 miles min. and 75% hwy.
Backroad driving takes it down in the mid teens ( :
Best car I have had so far in terms of performance/mpg was the M3. I could get 28/29 hwy pushing 100 mph forever and in the city I would get low 20's really driving hard. Always was impressed with that. However, that has A LOT to do with it being watercooled and having all the associated control processes for the injection air/fuel mix.
For an air cooled engine, the 993 does very well in gas efficiency.
