Default New C4S - Burning Smell from Left Rear Quarter

Hey folks,

It's been a bittersweet few months since getting my 1996 C4S. It was a gift to me from my mother, as it was my father's car. He passed away a few years ago, and the car has been sitting garaged since, and we were all sitting trying to figure out what the hell to do with it. I remember when i was a kid, Dad would take the keys with him on trips, to ensure I didn't take 'er for a spin and turn it into German scrap.

I've seen the phrase "drive like you stole it" used frequently on here, and goddamn if I don't. It had 6,000 mi on it when I got it, and I've put on at least another 1,500 in five months.

Here's my issue: there appears to be somewhat of a burning smell that I'm not familiar with, emanating from specifically the left rear quarter. There appears to be a ton of heat, as well. Normal? Abnormal?

I'm heading to Tony Callas' shop tomorrow to have the thing sorted, but wondering if this issue is to be expected.

Sorry about your father. Valve cover leak probably that is dripping onto the exhaust.

Tony will sort it out for you. He knows the 993's inside and out.

The smell is more than likely from a leaking valve cover gasket as it generally leaks right onto the heat exchanger. These cars radiate heat normally, not to worry about that. Sounds like a low mileage gem! Love see some pics!

Agreed, especially after two years of sitting.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. I lost mine in 1985 and just lost my Mom about two years ago.

Enjoy the car, and take good care of it. It's what your Dad probably would
have wanted!

PS Pics, pics, pics!

Looks like the fence post to me and nothing from Starbucks!
Sorry about your father. I had a similar situation except I acquired my dad's 928 after many years of my mom's new husband's abuse of the car. He was very wealthy and didn't care about cars. To him they were disposable items. Smashing into a curb or cracking the spoiler on a tire stop didn't phase him one bit. Unless it didn't run no reason to get the thing serviced. Anyhow glad you wound up with something that has some value and can provide a little memory of you dad when you drive it. My dad also had a large collection of Rolls, Bentleys, Jags, and a bunch of cars that I would've killed for that are now going at the Barrat-Jackson auctions for $50K-$100K!!!! Ahh, hind-sight....It was always fun driving around in all those cool cars as a teenager. Especially the Rolls Royces....they were sooooo cush!!

Sounds like your smell is coming from burning oil dripping from a lower valve cover leak. May be hard to see with the engine tray underneath the engine. Should be a pretty inexpensive repair. Enjoy the new ride.
