Default Went back to stock airbox cover, lost HP.

Well...

When I bought the Red Thing it had a carbon-fibre-ey air box lid, I think the Fabspeed one.

Too noisy! So I bought a nice used stock one.

I was pleased with how much quieter the car got. Face it, a red 911 is never going to be stealthy, but there's no point in letting people who are a 1/4 mile away know you're coming.

So I've driven it for 2 weeks with the stock air box, and I am forced to conclude: the car isn't as powerful.

SO

Now what am I going to do? I don't want a loud ride, but I'd sure like those ~10 ponies back! I could put the Fabspeed thing on again, but....

Open air box is loud at WOT and not when you cruise around. When you nail it, the entire car is loud so what's the diff if you have a little intake sound. A bunch of guys run B&B exhaust, Fabspeed, bypass cat, exhaust bypass, supercup exhaust and you're scared of being too loud with an airbox.......

Drill out the stock airbox. It shouldn't be as loud as the Fabspeed cover, but will allow more air. Or, get the Fabspeed Supercup exhaust, then you won't hear the airbox at all!

My car also has a bypass and Fabspeed mufflers. When I say it's loud, it's loud, and not just at WOT. The airbox makes a difference.

I am actually thinking about replacing the top of the stock airbox with some kind of baffled grille. That would pass more air but would break up the sound waves some. Need to think....

You think the airbox cover is loud? Did you previously drive an electric car?

I have 2 covers. I use the stock cover, for when the wife & kids are in the car, and most of the winter. I use the open airbox cover for track days, spirited drives, and most of the summer.

That is what I was thinking of doing, Brian, but I'd really like to have that HP on tap all the time...

I just had another idea: a flap/hatch on the airbox lid, that I could open or close as desired.... maybe with a cable actuator... Hm....

Better yet, you can attach a T connector to the vacum line that activates the varioram actuator and make a flap on the lid with a second actuator that opens when the varioram kicks in.

I find it hard to believe that you really lost 10hp without any empirical measurement. Maybe is just "feels" that way since it's quieter.

I'm looking to do this or the Evolution intake setup (I have an Evo on my 964 and really like it a lot). $25 is a lot cheaper than $350...

This whole thread is a joke, right? You seriously think your car is a lot slower now with a factory airbox? No way. Sure you get a couple hp at the top end, but it's nothing you can feel.

Honestly I can't tell if you're just kidding around or not.
