To answer your doubt?
One of the greatest French military victories in my opinion?
Is helping the americans gain their independance 1778-1782
You can do a search in any history book and you will see that.
According to Mary McCormack phd head of Smithonian institute Archives.
"If it wasn't for the French, the United States would have never existed"
one small reference to remind you:
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ho/time/ar/14312.htm
Funny enough, I just discovered that its the French that gave the name,
"The United States" to the so called United colonies in 1771.
and that the American Flag was historically first saluted and honoured by the french Navy in 1773
etc. etc.

The French and Warfare
If you have some spare time, read The Collapse of the Third Republic, an Inquiry into the Fall of France in 1940 by William L. Shirer, Simon and Schuster, New York, 1969, deals with the collapse of the French Third Republic in 1940 at the outset of Hitler's Western invasion during World War II. Here you will discover that not all of the French army collapsed, some units fought with distinction, much to the surprise of the Germans. I have read that the French underground was a significant force in occupied france...don't have all the details. I do know there are pros and coms on this...BUT this is a Porsche 993 Forum, not a history course.
However, that is not to say that we could not have learned some hard lessons from the French military experience, historical parallels so to speak. Example, the French experience in Indo-China VS the US experience in Vietnam...the French experience in Algeria, a Muslim country, and the US experience in Irag, hmmmm.
And by the way, the French make some incredible airplanes, such as the Mirage jet armed with an Exocet missile. Ask the Brits about their experience with the Exocet missile and the Mirage fighter in the Falkland Island War. I believe the Israelis also fly the Mirage along with US planes, and planes they make in Israel
And lastly, the French support of the US was critical in the US Revolution against G.B.
