99% of us would never know the difference between driving a 2 and 4. A 4 may be better in the snow, but get frikken real - are you gonna take your $50K limited production jewel out on frozen streets when every other dumbass is cruising at normal speeds in their Explorer.

And Big Reds won't stop you faster when the minivan cuts you off - that's just silly.

This is a funny thread... Up until now, we have had threads of air-cooled versus water-cooled, 993 versus 996, etc. Now there is even infighting between individual 993 models!

Fries sounds good, I just made more popcorn, invited some friends over to watch so we can do waves if it gets too boring...

This can't be the first thread on this?
I'm brand new to the forum but I have to jump in on this one. Sit back for the 2nd half of this show cabrio993.

I've owned both I had a 1998 993 C4S bought it with 4K miles on it - delete option on the sunroof silver on black with an andial 3.8L coversion... I never got it dialed in right.. a little dissapointing all in all. It drove me crazy that a 97 993 C2 cab would walk away from me every day on the drive home up 280 NorCal especially 45-100mph. I couldn't live with it... (I knew the owner of the other cab really well) I swapped cars with him to make sure it wasn;t the driver.

dynos, chips, gas brands... something was wrong or... it was the extra weight and 4WD taking some power... anyhow... that car (including the box of 3.6L pistons, cylinders, cams) belongs to someone else now... i went 3 years without and my new 1997 c2 cab blk/blk shows up Tuesday... 26K miles... i wont tell you what i paid but it better be faster than that SOB C4S...

i do miss the look of that car... If I had known this forum existing I might have thought to disconnect the 4wd i think i saw a thread on that someplace for 993 TT owners or maybe DavidinLA told me about it as I've been stalking his wheels... anyway.. whats done is done... can't wait to see what kind of mess i get myself in with this one...

BTW I need an aluminum/leather shifter and break - i hate the leather ones.. someone here can have em if they can point me to the cheapest source for a set.. i lost a bid on ebay for one yesterday.. i was winning at $1.25 foor 4days :-)

If I were considering C2S vs. C4S I'd probably get a C4S since they're so much cheaper.

ditto... also have to say the c4s that i drove was really impressive in the twisties... a weird feeling getting pushed & pulled through areas. i like the 4s!

i'd also opt for that model too... but i'd keep my 2wd cab as well.

Don't forget that there a big differences in hp from car to car. My previous '95 Carrera was dynoed at 278 hp, while, the same day, a friend of mine with a '97 Carrera S, had his dynoed at the same place at 255hp! No wonder I was faster than he was. You just have to be lucky and get a good one....

Good point on the HP differences. I'm interested in where mine dynos as well. It's going in sometime this week or early next week. It's a 96 C4S, LWF, RS Clutch, RS Gears. Two dealers have told me it's one of the quickest 993's they've driven. Granted, the options don't have anything to do with engine HP, but I'll be interested to see in particular where the torque at the wheels comes out.

Has anyone been able to determine why the same stock engine produces such differences in HP? Has this always been the case with Porsche engines or is this issue particular to the 993? I haven't seen the topic come up that often on previous versions where everything was in working order (compression, etc.).

Munch, munch.

I was told that one reason is that there is most times an imbalance in the camshaft timing between the two cylinder banks. Takes too long to adjust perfectly when built in the factory and gets tested and drifts anyway.

P.S. in respect to gearing, this is interesting:

gearing effect on torque

as well as LWF effect....how a lwf works

It's probably no worse than caning a $105,000 996 GT3 cup car on the track, with the possibility of wadding it up in a ball from someone else's oil leak or, more likely, one's own driving error.

I uised to drive my C2S on the street year round, with proper snows it was great and a lot of fun. I would spray it off every day or two in that kind of weather.

993RS, thanks for all the information. Excellent reading. On my 740iL, I changed the final drive ratio and it was noticeably quicker. I can tell my C4S is quick out of the hole with the RS gear package, but I've lost my top end advantage since my 5th gear is is now 6th. Your article verified my understanding of gear ratios on torque. Since torque (and weight of course) are the key parameters in determining acceleration, this explains why my C4S feels quick; that and the LWF of course. I didn't realize the equivalent weight loss was so great at the lower gears using a LWF. We're obviously not talking about an M3 as in the article, but assuming the 300lb virtual weight loss is close, that puts my 993 at the equivalent weight of a 911SC but with 100 more HP and 70 more ft/lbs of torque when I start off in first gear. Oh yeah.
