I'm trying to figure out which parts of my 993's interior are leather and which are vinyl. The car has the "982 Supple Leather Seats/Trim" option.

So far, I think the seats, steering wheel, shift boot and possibly the center console/bat phone are the only leather parts. The rear seats, door panels and such seem to be vinyl or plastic. Is this correct? What about the seat backs, it's hard to tell.

Why do I care? Only because I want to know where to put the 303 and where to put the leather cleaner.

This is what I read somewhere on her...stick your fingernail into it...if it leaves a crease for a bit it is ? and vice versa it is ?. Do the test and you should be able to tell. Can't remember which is which...

Vinyl springs back (no crease), leather leaves crease for a bit.
Or so I hear (somebody just asked the auto writer for the Boston Globe, which is the only reason I remeber it).

On mine, with the supple leather option, it specifically states 'supple leather, front and rear seats'. Beyond that, it's steering wheel, shift boot (I have the RS one). and handbrake handle. The seat backs and everything else appear to be vinyl in mine. Although the vinyal used for the seat backs could easily pass for leather.

When I bought my first pcar, the previous owner made me agree to never ever put Armorall anwhere on the car.

Bump for an old thread. Bruce raises a good question.

I have the full leather option, including the optional supple leather front and rear seats. My take is that on my car, the following items are leather: SW, upper/lower dash, door handles/lid, centre console, shifter, e-brake, front/rear seats. That's it. I think the door panels are vinyl(??). The centre piece or the dash (where the instruments are) is also vinyl? Rear shelf and quarter panels vinyl?

Just want to make sure (like Bruce) where to put Leatherique and where to put 303..

The door panels, rear shelf, and rear quarters were all available in leather but I suspect that leather is pretty rare for these parts. I also suspect that the upper door trim was typically leather regardless of options purchased (mine is leather, while the rest of the car was vinyl).

There's only one part # specified for the black instrument cover and the parts I've seen have been vinyl, so I don't think it was offered in leather.

First, NEVER use Armorall on the interior, or leather. It's BAD for it.

The 993 uses very high quality vinyl. It can be hard to tell what is what. Also the early cars have slightly different vinyl then the later cars. On the 993 if it IS leather, it will have stitching around it. My 95 has leather door panels, arm rest, dash, center console, & knee bolster. All have stitching on them. You can see it in this pic.

Easy, leather treatment will get absorbed in leather and get darker while the product will just float on the surface of vinyl.

2Many Cars

The problem with using some of the cleaners/treatments on leather is actually the stiching. Some are mildly acidic and will rot the stitching over time but since for the most part vinyl doesn't have stiching it's not an issue with vinyl.

Always use these treatments very sparingly on any surface where the vinyl is glued to a backing (like the dash) as heavy use can dissolve the glue over time. I know someone who learned this the hard way using Armor All on the dash of his Alfa.

armorall oh god please... that is an acholol based product that dries everything out. avoid at all costs.
