Anyone replaced suspension or rear subframe rubber yet? Anyone planning to?

New steering rack and shocks also but I replace alot of things as a hobby not because they need it !

I thought Ray Calvo was the only one who could do that....or someone with a 200 mile commute each day on an open highway where they never need to use the brakes because they always coast to a stop.

Chris, don't sweat the rack. Check your garage floor between the front wheels. If you see clear oil drops, it's your rack leaking. Sometimes there is a leak at the resevouir. Most people, if they don't notice the drops of oil, hear the sound (like your right rear wheel is rubbing against the fender) or hard left hand turns. If you don't have these symptoms, you don't have a problem.

I'm not sure what you mean by suspension, you should be replacing (or rebuilding) dampers quite frequently -- driving a 993 on ten year-old dampers?
As for the rear sub-frame, I just swapped that rubber out for solid bushings. I didn't see any signs of age or wear. I wonder if the rubber would ever just degrade or decompose in the space of a decade? Maybe three decades (like an early 911) but it's not really exposed to much ozone or UV and shouldn't be getting harmful fluids in there. If you're at an engine-out on a high-miler and want to play with a stiffer chassis tune, it might be interesting, especially if you're enjoying wrenching for fun rather than net gains or bang for the buck. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I'd be interested to hear of other alternator failures or any other "left me on the side of the road" failures.

For the alternator, it can be tested for performance and bearing noise.

For the steering rack, the only test I know is leaking at the seals which can be obscured by the boots for a while. Of course a failed boot on either track-rod boot will lead to contamination and failure. Otherwise, having seen how very few people understand that grease and hydraulic fluid seals do not like each other -- greasy hands around steering and braking systems is a recipe for failure.

By the way, the grinding noise is air in the pump on the leaking side (the other side is still compressed, so the pump isn't scavenging.

I wonder if anyone is having trouble with the drive belt on the power steering pump?

I had my fuel pump go kaput a couple years ago. Just died going 70mph.
I'd be curious to see if anybody's still running an original pump past 100k miles.

Hmmm. Going "lean" at 70mph under load would be a big deal in a Turbo. Might be worth including a pump in the "preventative maintenance" schedule close to 100K.

Just clicked 185,782 miles today on Croft Circuit doing a trackday. I was driving and holding RS's and GT3's among others at bay through the twisty stuff, as was my mate in his rather quick 3.2.

My friend Andy, an ARDS instructor who has a penchant for driving at 90 degrees to the direction of travel - not the quickest way around a track but certainly the most entertaining , was giving it full beans and passing them all, full stop. The engine and gearbox have never had anything but routine servicing and she didn't miss a beat. Weather was warm too.

At the end of the day, Andy was hanging off the bumper of a 996 GT3 Cup Car. "How the hell did you manage that?" I asked. His reply was simple - "Your car's really well balanced and you can do a lot with that. He's got straight line power, but stuffs the corners - he's got a nice line, but he thinks he's on a different track!"

Just goes to show how potent a 993 can be with the right bloke behind the wheel! And I was thinking of a move to a GT3! Think I'll keep the 993 and spent the money on trackdays and tuition!

These cars do well, when maintained, in higher mileages -- they are solid cars!
