Default Steering Wheel replacement

Hi all,

Just looking for some advice regarding replacing the stock steering wheel with an aftermarket wheel that has no airbag. (i just cant get over now nice that suede/alcantra material feels) The dealer I was talking to told me that I would have to live with the "airbag" warning light being on if I were to switch to a wheel that has no airbag unit. Is there any way around this? Some sort of wiring kit that could fool the ecu into thinking that there is still an airbag?

TIA

Rob

IIRC a large (wattage that is) 2.9 Ohm resistor works for most people who have done this.

(Resistor replaces the airbag for "sensing" it's still there)

Search should pull up more info. Try "airbag AND resistor" in the terms

Thumbs up

I've been told by akolodesh (lifetime member) that www.airbagonoff.com sells a disconnect kit for around $35-- says it worked great for him. Not trying to sell anything here-- no affiliation -- just trying to help.

Your dealer doesn't know much about cars. Like mentioned above, I bought a resistor from airbagonoff.com, because I didn't see consistent info about proper resistor size. They just send a little resistor with a wire coming out of each end, that's all. But it does work. Search on my posts from this winter, because I think I had a lot of comments about how to install a non-airbag wheel.

Here's the thread I was referring to. It should answer all your questions.

BTW, I wouldn't expect a dealer to be willing to do this stuff. THey don't want to get anywhere near airbag stuff.

I don't know if 993 and 964 are the same for that matter but I got from my dealer a "bypass" plug (part # starts with 928.....). It is located underneath the centre console. Do a search on momo steering wheel.

Edit; Part # 928.612.220.00

FWIW, I replaced mine with the AJ USA wheel (manufactured by Atiwe) and think it's a great upgrade... plus you are able to keep the airbag.

before you swith to a non-airbag wheel, you should check with your insurance carrier. others have reported large rate-ups when they informed their carrier they were going w/o an airbag

Hi Rob,

I'd be interested to know which wheel you are considering.

I just bought one of the 993 Cup steering wheels from Gert. They are made for Porsche by Momo. It has a suede-like material covering the wheel, and comes with a cool Porsche logo embedded in the right spoke, and a Porsche crest in the horn button.

I've scheduled an appointment with my indy Porsche mechanic to have it installed next week.

I have an aftermarket wheel installed in my 968 (a 968 club sport wheel), and I have to tell you...it really transforms the car. I'm hoping for a similar experience with the Momo cup wheel in my 993.

Best regards,

- rick

The AJ USA wheel with airbag is a great choice! Great feel and looks, and, while not inexpensive, is not a bad deal compared to RUF. I am waiting to have it installed on the 993 (next week, along with sport springs and shocks).

yet more proof that if you want to talk to someone who knows nothing about cars, just go to a dealer.

Many of us here have this awesome wheel. It is amazing how much better I can control the car with this wheel's diameter, tactility, rim width and, more relevant to others, decreased wheel-to-driver distance.
