Default Cost to replace clutch

New member here. 1996 C2 Arena Red/Cashmere. 22k miles.

I was in for an oil change and the local Seattle Porsche dealer tells me that my clutch is engaging fairly high which means I may be looking at having it replaced. I also noticed that after it is fully warmed up, the clutch travel is less than smooth. Anyways, I was told about $4500 for a new clutch and more to have the master and slave replaced. Anyways, here are my questions:
1. any advantage to having the dealer do it?
2. why is the cost so high?

I have always steered clear of the Dealers -- well now I do at least. I have never had anything done well for a fair price and have actually had my car returned to me damaged. I would ask those on the board for a good shop in your area.

If you are in Seattle, take your car to Aker's, they are downtown. I had a PPI done there, great shop!

Typical clutch replacement costs should be about half of what your were quoted. Look into another shop.

I only have the dealer touch my car, however I can understand how some like to mark up labor rates more than others. it is a good idea to have a great relationship with your dealer.

Get a second or third opinion, Porsche clutches can catch high, no need to replace if not slipping. Just ask shop to check if clutch seems ok. Don't tell them what you think. You can check slipping going up a hill slow in 3rd or 4th gear and nail it. See if slips. I will leave alone even if catches high, wait until it may slip. 22K for clutch replace sounds way to early. Most last 100K miles or more.

Good luck with your purchase, and welcome!

I just purchased a '95 993 and had the clutch, slave, all hoses, distributor belts, cap, rotor, all belts, plugs, and fluid change done for that price so it seems a bit hight, but then I come from a history of F-car ownership and thus high is relative!

One thing you might want to check into is purchasing the parts online. When I replaced the clutch in my 964, PAP was many hundreds less than the dealers. Then I had a local shop just do the labor.

My clutch has caught high since 25k miles when I got it, now with close to 70k still no slipping. Wait it out.

Not usually-- the slave is just the messenger Clutch disk thickness sets the take-up point..
