Default its a 911! not a carrera!

It may just be that I see this a lot since I am in the business, but I am very quickly becoming tired of those who dont know the car. I hear, "you have any carrera turbos?" or "yea I have a 72' carrera." is the 911 dead? another one "I hear the new carrera targa is coming out" it seems like porsche themselves perpetuate this as well. mabye I am just ****, but it makes me cringe when I hear the phrase "carrera turbo"

another pet peeve is "does the cayman come in convertible" but thats for another day.

It’s Porsche's own fault. The 911 hasn't worn the 911 badge since 83, except for the 40 anniversary edition. But those who know, know...

I'm sure they are just newbies to Porsche.

Does the Cayman come in a convertible???

Um..Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think Porsche has manufactured a 911 since the mid-80's. Depending on the year made, and what Porsche named the project, they are 911's, 930's, 935's, 964's, 993's, 996's or 997's (I'm sure I mssed some in there somewhere). My understanding is that most of the numbering represents Porsche project numbers, but at least two are out of sequence. The 911 was originally project # 901, but Peugot was already using that designator and filed legal action, so Porsche changed it to 911. The other I am aware of is the 993. According to Adrain Strather, the 993 got it numeric designation because it was introduce in September , 1993.

I can't believe I know this stuff and bothered to write it out...I am becoming a boor...Apologies... I think I'll go take a nap.

Well if they aren't all 911s then Porsche hasn't been making the same model for over 40 years. How could they even have a 40 year anniversary model then?

I can't believe I took to time to write this.

I always think of the "911" designation as underlying all of the variants which evolved from the original model. I think that is underscored by the 40th anniversary 996 with the distinctive "911" badges. My "911" is a Carerra 4S in the 993 series. When Porsche stops making the 911 they will tell us so.

So yesterday afternoon I call my local P-car dealer to talk to a salesman. I told him I might be interested in a 997 TT and wanted to find out some info/availability, etc.
He procedeed to tell me that they had Boxsters, Carrera's, Caymans's.. I said again, I'm interested in the 997 TT. He responds by telling me they have the coupe, convertible, awd... I said again, I'm interested in the 997 TT !!! You know the twin turbo. He responds, Oh, I think we just got one of those

I don't understand your problem. To the best of my recollection Carrera is exactly what it says on the back of every rear engined Porsche made since 1984 except turbos and some special cars.

I't still a 911 and has always said so on the window sticker, web site etc. 993, 997 is just the internal designation.

Porsches own sales brochures always say the "new 911 Carrrera" when a new model comes out. Regardless of the internal model type. They never say come buy a 997. Only Porsche geeks like us even know the existance of the internal Porsche model numbers like 993, 996, 997 etc. If you tell someone you drive a 1995 993 their eyes glaze over. If you tell them you drive a 1995 911 they know what you are talking about. As for calling our cars a Carrea that is also accurate. According to Porsche the correct name for our cars is 911 Carrera type 993.

All...Thanks for correcting me.

There's a verse in Bob Dylan's "Tombstone Blues" that applies here:

I wish I could write you a melody so plain
That would hold you dear lady from going insane
That could ease you and cool you and cease the pain
Of your useless and pointless knowledge

There is such a thing as too much knowledge for one's own good and I just demontrated that.
