I did a brief glance over this site and could not find allot of DIY tech articles. All were very generic and mostly simply suggested what to buy, not Q&A in terms of installations and trouble shooting. Don't get me wrong, I've been on this site since 1998 under 3 different usernames and I think it's a great community. I simply wanting more once I begin ownership. I've owned older Porsche's on the past but my dream car is a 993. I'm the kind of person who does EVERYTHING myself, except machining and tranny rebuilds. I don't have the tooling or inclination to go that far.
Specifically, I especially enjoy tuning. I can't seem however to find anything on this topic. What software are people using to tune their own vehicles and write those changes to the EEPROM? What hardware to read and write the BIN's to the chip? I mean heck, I can't even find basic information to even know if these DMEs have EEPROM or just PROM's? What years are MAP or how to convert 993's from MAF to MAP? Info on repinning the harness to add specialized sensors like MAT or WB o2 and knowing where in the BIN file to make the needed changes etc. Where is all this info? I can't even seem to find what people here use for simple data logging thru the OBD2 in conjunction with a seperate WB sensor.
I tune GM's, specifically MAF & MAP cars from 1985-present. All from Y-Bodies to F-Bodies and any other F.I. GM vehicle. It was my way of taking my car hobby to the next level as I'm a sponge for learning.
I'm going to buy a 993 C2S as my base platform but I enjoy working on my cars as part of the hobby, not paying someone else to do everything while I learn nothing and don't get my hands dirty simply to drive it on rare occasions.
Now I know there are some hard-core track guys on here who have got to know where to go for in-depth tech help. Where is it? Lol.
Thanks! Alex

VERY sweet. Atleast I know now that 95's have an EPROM that I can upgrade to an Amtel 29C256 EEPROM for tuning and I found the info for doing basic scans. Uses a standard ZIF appearantly too. Just need to know what software is used for tuning and where to get the DME files and factory BIN's from...
I'll definantly be doing allot of reading on there. Anyone know where I can buy a factory hard-bound technical manual for the 993? Does PC-USA sell them to the public? I haven't been a PCA member for 5 years. Are there classifieds ads in Excellence magazine for items like that?
Thanks!
EDIT: Looks like the software is made by GIAC. Also Pelican Parts seems to have allot of good stuff on their site for sale...

Also,
Have you noticed the search function?
This way you find olders posts about what ever you are looking for, there are lot of DIY/technical articles even though nowadays there aren't.

Most of the reason for few recent DIY posts is that the previous ones are good enough. Couple that with Robin's site (the www.p-car.com site above) and we have a pretty good repository of information. However, DIY ECU tweaks are few.

There is nothing in the archives here or on p-car.com that goes into any detail describing what your looking for. The aftermarket chip dealers aren't going to know either. There are 2 or 3 companies outside of the USA selling editing software for the MY95 ECU but nothing for OBD2 MY96-MY98. If your looking for info what you'll need to do is crack open an ECU box and get your hands dirty with a logic analyzer, oscilliscope, rom emulator and a software disassembler. I would start with the Probst book, "How to Understand, Service and Modify Bosch Fuel Injection & Engine Management" sold by Bentley publishers. Things have changed over the years but the overall functionality hasn't and that will at least give you a starting point.
