Default Axle replacement

Has anyone replaced a complete rear axle and wheel bearing? What tools are required? Also, what's the opinion of aftermarket axle assemblies? MUCH cheaper but any good?
Thanks, Tom '91 C-2

I did wheel bearings on a 96 c2. This involved removing the outer half of the axle. With the bearing puller tool from EBS and the pcar diy site, it was uneventful. I don't believe the inner half of the axle involves anything more than unbolting it from the flanges.

The only part of this work that limits people is getting the proper torque on the driveflange nut (335ft.lbs). The wheel bearing requires this clamp loading. Other than that, its not hard at all..

Oh yeah... Helps to have a 3/4" torque wrench.

You can always rent a torque wrench that size...I assume the brakes can hold the hub still enough to put this much torque out?

Cheers,

Mike

Yes, the brakes do fine in holding. P-car.com has a writeup on the bearing R&R, which requires an axle R&R too. Check there.

I believe the same writeup is on the DIY section of Rennlist too...

Have fun, I'm doing the same thing right now...

If you are the replacing the wheel bearings on your 964 be aware that the torque specification for the front wheel hub nut is different depending on the type (there are 3) of tensioning rings you have installed!

For any Carrera 2 produced before November 28, 1991 the nuts are torqued to 460Nm (339 ft-lbs). For a Carrera 2 with VIN greater than:
960 NS 420564 Coupe
966 NS 440189 Targa
968 NS 460593 Cabriolet

the nuts are torqued to 420 Nm (310ft-lbs). Unless your Carrera 2's was produced after April 1, 1992 with a VIN greater than:

966 NS 420701 Coupe
966 NS 440208 Targa
966 NS 460916 Cabriolet

in which case the torque spec is 460Nm (339 ft-lbs). The spec is also different for roadster, turbo, etc.
