Question Remove Floor Mats?

I washed my car this weekend, and as I was putting the floor mats back in, I noticed how clean and nice the carpet pieces under the mats looked. The interior actually looked cleanter without my somewhat worn and fuzzy matts. So, I put all four mats away in the garage, and I've been driving on just the floor pieces (the ones held in by the large plastic screw things) for a couple of days.

The passenger side looks factory new, and it will probably stay that way, since on one ever sits there. And the leather area under the pedals on the driver's side looks cool - purposeful and kind of vintage-looking.

So, I'm curious. Do any of you go without floor mats?

When running a DE, you remove the top mats and run with the bottom mats. The top mats keep the floor mats looking good.

Your mats look worn and fuzzy as they have been doing their job. If you leave them off, your carpets (at least the drivers side) will start to look the same way. The mats are easily replaced, although I wish you could just buy the driver's side as this is the one that gets worn first and the others look fine.

OEM carpet sets are much more expensive to replace than mats, so I would leave the mats to do their work protecting your carpet.

What Darren said. Simply replace old mats wtih good new ones to restore the look of your interior ...can't do that with carpet.

Buy new floormats. I need to do this too. With out the floormats you are just going to wear out the carpet and that probably cost a lot more than new floormats.

I took the mat ou of the driver's side over a year ago. It was ugly and smelly and made the carpet too thick...hard to work the pedals. I'll probably order a new set (to correct ugly and smelly) but keep the new drivers side mat in a bag until I'm ready to sell the car....

Default Newbie Mat(s) Question

When removing the front mats for cleaning.. I noticed the floor itself is exposed. There is no carpeting in the area that the mats cover. Is this normal?

Sorry for the silly question.

Thanks

Under the color keyed carpet there is supposed to be a fitted layer of sound absorption material. It also serves to level the flooor, as there are several conduits that run fore and aft across the floor.

Many people remove it and replace w/ aluminum sheet for lightness.

Floormats are key . . . LOVE the Lloyd mats I got to replace mine . . . then I ditched the driver's side for an aluminum mat . . . as it was getting WAY dirtier than the passenger side . . . started looking odd.

I have size 12 shoes so toe heel is next to impossible with the carpet in. I need some of those aluminum floormats.

Scott could you tell me where you go them?

There are 2 kinds of aluminum mats

type A just replaces the carpet, that is what appears in the pics shown above. The underlaying sound deadener is retained(along w/ it's weight)

type b replaces both the carpet and underlaying sound deadener. This type has risers and is bolted to the floor, this is what is used in Cup cars. Don Plumly recently made his own form .08 Aluminum sheet.

If the sound/water absorption pad has been removed you should check for any part of the wiring harness (DME) that may run under there for chafing and then put something (wood, aluminum, a new sponge #993-556-217-00), etc.) over it.

One really nice feature of the LLoyd mats is the have a longer screw that replaces the one in the OEM mats and then it can't slide around.

the aluminum mats scott has in the picture are from rennline...they are called track mats. they also make the pedals and alum floor board under the pedals which replaces the stock wood floor board. i have the same set up in my tt and its very nice.

Scott, or Bigimp- Have you noticed a considerable noise level increase when you removed the sound insulation and installed the Cup-Alu board? I'm thinking of going that route and wanted to be sure it didnt get too loud- My foam and deadening material are really shot and there is an indent where your heel is.. pretty low-tech-

Thanks-
Coleman
