Top 10 reasons why my 87' Audi Coupe GT is better than my 993
I can't help but wonder when I drive my 3rd example Audi Coupe GT 2.3L special build daily, why my 95' 993 has so many "small" issues that constantly need attention. Even after a large donation to the stealer to address the dreaded cel/sai carbonization build up issue at 95k miles, it appears other annoying issues continue to be just around the blind corner of 100k miles.
Don't get me wrong I love my pcar and am very grateful I went with the 993 over the 964. Yet my Porsche now currently sits garage bound. After removing it from winter storage last month I discovered the brake pedal goes to the floor after trying to drive it. The pedal will slowly build pressure if pumped then lose it all. So perhaps another thousand for a brake master cylinder is next on the list, since the stealer did a full brake fluid bleed before winter.
Top 10 reasons why my 87' Audi Coupe GT is better than my 993:
1. After 19 years the original windshield is still stone chip free and does not or has it ever, 'creaked.'
2. The drivers door does not have the dreaded 'click' from a poor weld design
3. The A pillars do not have small rust bubbles under/past the windshield seals
4. Zero oil leaks at 157k miles
5. An oil change involves only (1) 12mm socket, a crawl under the engine and my hand twisting (1) filter. Total time no more than 6 minutes, sense of accomplishment...priceless.
6. The rear window has never exploded
7. The secondary air injection ports have not clogged and appear clear :-)
8. Both sunvisors are still crisp and sag free
9. I have never been stranded by a dme relay failure
10. The instrument panel has never suffered any relay sending failures nor has the fixed rear spoiler ever made any grinding noises.
Cheers.

I think he is trying to say that the fact is owning a timeless classic like a 993 with plenty of character is "PRICELESS!!!!" ..................... I hope.......

geez.. I guess I'm lucky since the only complaint I have about my 96 is the pitted windshield (which will be replaced soon enough for free under my insurance due to finally getting a crack slowly spreading from a rock a semi-truck flung at it)...
In the past I had a VW Fox that went through 3 windshields due to cracking from flung rocks and I only had 56k miles total on that car before selling it so this being the 1st windshield I need for my 993, no complaints here!

Although many of your issues are not related to long term storage, I wonder how many problems are due or exacerbated by winter storage? Since all cars are mechanical, it may help if driven year around. Im sure someone on rennlist has talked about this in the past, so sorry for beating a dead horse....
When I worked at a marina as a boat mechanic, we always saw more problems on the boats/engines stored all winter versus the ones run year around.... Usually the problems surfaced in the spring, even on rigs that were "winterized".
You mention the ease of oil changes on the Audi - the 993 is the hardest oil change Ive ever done on a car. Its not hard to do again after the 1st time, but youve got to appreciate the 2x oil filters and dry sump lubrication only found on race cars (non-existent on the 996). If I wanted easy oil changes, I would be driving a japanese toyota or nissan. On that point, its only 4 qts!

Robin is too correct, my 993 is still the car I have always wanted and is always a joy to drive. I was just trying to illustrate how some of our cars small/large issues are not apparent whatsoever in a old Audi developed by fellow Germans nearly 20 years ago.

As I've always told everyone who wants to get into a 911, that the pre-996 911s requires much more attention than your normal "street" car, so expect to spend more time and money with it. But in the same token I also tell them that it is unlike any other car in the world and never again will any car manufacturer make a car like ours again. It is about owning a piece of a classic that brings smiles to your face everytime you touch it.
It is the only car I have ever owned that I actually don't get mad when there is any annoying factor with the little stuff. Can't say the same about all the MBZ I have owned.

Sounds as though you better sell that 993..
Curious as to why your 95 model is having SAI problems? Or, better worded, what errors does your 95 993 give you to indicate a SAI problem?

FWIW, my 993 has been the most reliable car I've ever owned. This includes several BMWs and a Toyota Mr2. In 40K plus miles under my ownership, I can't recall any problems.
Interestingly, working on my 993 is incredibly satisfying. The construction of the car is a pure blend of art and engineering. Built not as a disposable product, but instead to last beyond our lifetimes.
But hey, most older German cars - including Audis - are pretty good. I look for my E30 325is to last 500K miles......
Cheers,

My Audi (S4) is less than perfect but still an enjoyable car and I hesitate to make comparisons between it and my new 993 but:
1. the 993 has better glass (but both are less than stellar)
2. the 993 will never need new turbos- the Audi hasn't so far but may likely
3. neither cars leak oil
4. parts seem to be cheaper for the 993 (fron what I can tell so far)
5. neither car has any rust
6. my Audi sunroof "clicks" over big bumps
7. the 993 sunroof does not
8. no sunvisor saggage on either
9. no wing on the S4 to fail
10. the Audi smells better (must be the leather)
