Default Entering the Code into a CR-1

I should probably leave well enough alone and forget this but it's bugging me.

My '95 has a stock CR-1 radio that powers up but does not work. I've had the car 8 months and it was like that from day one. I did a search and found that if you hold down the AM-FM button the word "Code" will appear. Low and behold, I tried it and it worked. I entered the four digit code and the numbers appeared in bright orange. But nothing happened. I tried again and could no longer get the word "code" to appear. I waited 24 hours and got "code" again. Again entered the numbers and this time pressed the up arrow. Nothing Now I read that you have to hit "mode" after entering the four numbers.... This seems ridiculous as the manual doesn't mention any of this. Does anyone know the proper sequence?

(There is a CD button but there is no cd changer in the car.)

Thanks!

On my CDR-210 or 220, after a power disconnect the code word shows automatically when you turn on the power of the radio, after entering the code I just to hit the radio search up or down button and then the unit begins to function

I've got a CR-1 in my '95, and I just enter the 4-digit code. That's it - no "mode" button afterwards.

If you get the code wrong twice, you have to wait a certain amount of time, and the time increases with each incorrect guess. I don't remember the exact timelines, but it goes up to several hours you must wait. It sounds like you might be putting the wrong code in and locking it up?

OK, you got me curious - this is from the CR1 manual:

To enter your sec. code, turn the radio on and use the push buttons

If you make a mistake, the four digits will remain in the display. Push BAND for more than two seconds and enter the code again.

The time required for "CODE" to appear increases corresponding to the num. of mistakes you make---

1 time 0 min
2 time 15 min
3 time 30 min
4 time 45 min
5 time 60 min

Hope this helps.

Are you sure the code is correct? Your symptoms are exactly what happened to me. I had the wrong code handed down to me by the PO. I banged my head up against the wall after a search, because I was certain I was doing everything correctly to get my radio back online after having work done on my 96. I finally got fed up and took it the dealer to ask what I was doing wrong. A tech came out with some tools, pulled the radio and from the serial number on the back looked up the correct code for me. BTW the dealer was actually great, sent the kid out, pulled the radio in the parking lot, came back with the code, entered it with me and apologized for me inconvenience.
Good luck.

Pulled from here a while back. Sorry, I don't appear to have the name of who donated this:

The following is exerpted from the CR-1 Operations Guide:

"Your PORSCHE radio will not operate once it is removed from the
console, making it virtually useless to a thief. The only way to
restore power to the radio once it is removed is to enter a four-digit
security code unique to your radio. The anti-theft features of your
radio operate as follows:

1. When the ignition key is removed, the red anti-theft LED indicator
will flash continuously.

2. A dead battery, electrical repairs, radio removal or reduction of
voltage supply to less than a preset value will render the radio
inoperable until voltage is restored and the security code is entered.
The radio must be turned on before the code is entered. The word
'CODE' will show on the display.

3. To enter your security code, which can be found on the two cards
supplied to you by PORSCHE, turn the radio on and use the appropriately
numbered radio push-button selectors.

EXAMPLE:

Push the Preset switch No.1. 1

Push the Preset switch No.2. 1 2

Push the Preset switch No.3 1 2 3

Push the Preset switch No.4 1 2 3 4

When the code is entered correctly, the radio is set to the Radio or
the Tape mode and you can make normal operations.

<underline>Important</underline>: If you make a mistake
in entering your code, the four digit figures will remain in the
display. In such a case, push the BAND SELECTOR Switch for more than 2
seconds and 'CODE' will appear in the display and you can enter the
code again.

However, the time required for the 'CODE' to appear on the display
increases corresponding to the number of mistakes you made as listed
below.

For example, if you make a mistake in second code entering, the display
becomes blank when you push the BAND SELECTOR Switch for more than 2
seconds and the 'CODE' will appear after 15 minutes.

<underline>Number of mistakes</underline> <underline>Code input inhibit
time</underline>

1 time 0 minute

2 time 15 minutes

3 time 30 minutes

4 time 45 minutes

5 time 60 minutes

4. Do not leave the code cards in your car. Place them in your wallet
or with your vehicle title papers for security. If you lose the code
cards, contact the nearest PORSCHE dealer. He will get your code from
PORSCHE. There may be a charge for removing the radio to ascertain its
chassis number.

5. If radio or electrical repairs become necessary, pleas give the
repair facility your radio code number. If you do not, only authorized
PORSCHE personnel can obtain the code from PORSCHE.

WARNING:

For your protection, codes will not be given out to anyone - under any
circumstances - except authorized Porsche dealer personnel after proof
of vehicle ownership and proper identification is established." (end
exerpted material)

Sounds like you'll have to make a trip to the dealer to get the proper code. As Brett noted, take proof of ownership when you go.
