Default oil change question

I have searched and find conflicting stories. Do I just need the 2 filters and 2 crush washers & oil to do a oil/filter change on a 98 993? or should I replace the 0 ring as well? Thanks, Jay

Thanks Scott, but that's what caused the confusion. dhicks, I am not talking about the drain plug washers, I am talking about the oil return tube 0 rings? What does everyone do, just the 2 washers?

I've never replaced the rubber o-ring, but I suppose it's not a bad idea every so often. I just replace the crush washers.

I did my last oil change without removing the oil return tube. If you are taking off the tube I think it would be worth replacing the first time and having one available from then on.

You don't have to replace the o-rings on the oil return tube, in matter of fact after countless oil changes and 90k miles later I still have not replaced them, and there are no leaks. But I do have the spare o-rings handy in case an unlucky day when I happen to break the o-ring while removing the oil return tube.

I believe there are a total of 3 o rings, 2 large and 1 small.

It is possible to get to the 2nd oil filter without removing the oil return line, but it is recommended in the shop manual, and you get an additional 1/2 quart of old oil out of the system. Removing the line just give you more access to the 2nd oil filter.

FWIW, I don't even replaced the crush washer on the drain plug.. don't know why they are call crush washers anyways, there is nothig to crush. No leaks what so ever, can't say the same for the valve cover, timing chain cover gaskets...

I've heard that this is possible, but for the life of me I can't see how. It's REALLY tight in there and I gave up almost immediately when I tried. Maybe next time...

Thanks.
Maybe the routing of that tube is different for different years because in my '97 I can get the small filter out with removing the tube fairly easily. Sure I can't drop the filter straight down once fully unscrewed but with a slight tilt it is not that hard to fish it out.

I have a '96 so I don't think it should be too different. Do you use a filter wrench on the small filter? If so, how do you finnagle it in there?
