I say this because I have seen many low mileage cars needing guides, and high mileage cars running well with minimal or no oil consumption troubles. Such required work seems to be all over the map in terms of mileage alone.

8 miles each direction about 1/2 of which is on the highway the other half stop sign/light hell then "nirvana" with the throttle between them (if you know what I mean.... and I'm sure you do). Virtually no rush hour oriented driving (well for some Vermonters it might be considered rush hour - I'm a "flatlander")This past weekend I drove about 400 relatively hard miles through the mountains and ate absolutely no oil. Now I am totally perplexed, perhaps with all of the talk of worn exhaust valve guides on 993/964's I've been suitably brainwashed into thinking it needs to be taken care of.

So what sort of oil consumption is a target that you may need to consider a top end rebuild? I have 118k, track it a fair amount (percentage wise, low miles each year overall), and burn maybe 800 miles but each of those quarts also include track time. Oh, and I replaced original clutch at 95k miles. First 70k miles of car were SoCal freeway driving to the Porsche dealer that owned the car.

JPS, I'd start a fund for the rebuild if I were you. But I'd keep driving it until the rebuild has to be done. You ain't there yet, but it will come.
