fuel capacity- reserve?
the book says the capacity is at 19 gallons, plus 2.6 reserve. is the reserve usable fuel? i just put 18.5 gallons in the car and i'm wondering if the car was 1/2 gallon from running dry, or 3 gallons. bottom line- i don't know what the term 'reserve' means in automobile fuel systems. with the aircraft, we simply call it usable fuel v. unusable. unusable is the fuel in the tank after the gauge reads zero and is unreliable in different flight attitudes.
but in a car- what is reserve? is reserve available?

Do you guys have ESP? Or just ESPN? The wife and I are going on a road trip the 2nd week of May. I was going to ask what our estimated range might be.
Some of the areas we will be traveling through, it may be quite a ways between gas stations. Thanks for the info!

Hey Mike- Not on the 993, but I do drive alot of miles on business and I have come to make a habit of knowing EXACTLY how much fuel is available in every vehicle I've owned.
Took my eye off the ball a few years back and burned up a little shoe leather. My boss was riding with me at the time, too. Good thing he had a sense of humor.... Lesson learned.

I've been 'monitoring' my own fuel use for over a year now and can categorically say that my AVERAGE = 22mpg.
AVERAGE = {highway in 6th. at 70mph} + {schlepping around town, stop lights, 30mph zones, etc.} -- WITH THE A/C OFF.
So, if you fill her to the gills (not TOO much ...you don't want to screw up the evaporation/charcoal canister return system) you should START planning for a fuel stop after 350 miles.
FWIW, (I'm also a pilot and like backup plans), in case my fuel-burn is 'different from predicted' I ALSO carry a small (1L) container of 'Emergency Fuel Stuff' (available at any Pepboyz) in the trunk. It comes in a yellow container and will give you 10+ miles of driving if/when you run the tank totally dry.
What with the crazy price of gas, nowadays, the propensity for folk to 'put off filling her up' or 'adding gas' is high -- so don't YOU become one of those!

We have 19-gal fuel tanks? Crap, my light comes on at like 16-17 gallons.
Which leads me to wonder.... is the "2.6 gal reserve" just the amount of gas you have left after the fuel light comes on?

To answer the specific question, the tank is 19.6 gallons INCLUDING the reserve. When the Red ! light comes on with the light orange 'gas' light, I fill about 17 gallons. The computer will say I have about 480 miles range while cruising at 65 MPH in 6th. The best I have ever gotton was 400 miles between fill-ups. However, the tank was not empty yet, so who knows. I'm not about to experiment and find out the hard way.

I observe that when my fuel light comes on and I fill up shortly after, it only takes about 15-16 gallons.. I have also driven about 20-30 miles after the fuel light comes on (mix of hwy and stop/go) and the tank will still only take 17-18 gallons. This leads me to believe that the light is pretty conservative and when it lights up you probably still have about 4-5 gallons left...
Based upon your type of driving (mpg) this should give you a reasonable estimate of how far you can go after the fuel light comes on. With a mix of stop/go and hwy driving, I generally get about 300 miles before the light comes on and I fill up and take in about 16-17 gallons. However I think we've all experienced that pure hwy driving will give significantly better gas milage and range.. Before seeing Jim's post I would have guessed around 400 mile mark before needing a fill up. To play it safe, sounds like 450 miles would be about as far as I would want to push it (or that may be what you end up doing)

Not sure about the 993, but know on the 1970 Austin America that as SOON as the gas gauge reads "Empty", it means EMPTY! Tried going about a quarter mile after the gauge hit empty to fill up at at station that had gas for 28 cents/gallon rather than 29 cents, and I didn't make it.
As others, I feel that when the gauge first reads "Empty" on the 993, you have several gallons left.

I usually fill close to top and drive until light comes on and usually get about 15-17 gallons give ot take a bit and usually get close to 300 plus/minus 10-20 miles so I am getting about 20 mpg.....no motorway cruising here though...but its good to know there is more in the tank....so to speak

Would anyone care to chime in with some figures for us other folks the other side of the pond, or down under, where one pint equals 20 fluid ounces? i.e. Imperial vs US gallons. Contrary to some beliefs size does matter.
