Also, I once tried to drive totally neutered around town (could only keep that snail pace up for 1/2 tank), but yielded just 20 mpg.

Can lower mpg be indictive of some type of engine inefficiency?

My years of experience say that you are doing nothing wrong....and there is nothing wrong with your car. You are "suffering" under the results of be a DRIVER, in real-life situations. Everyone brings out their "best I ever did under ideal situations when I drove like a neutered pig" results! In polite company, I say "drive the damn thing and screw the milelage"!

Amen. I checked my mileage on the first tank when I purchased the car. It got about 19-20mpg. That was good enough for me--no need to check again. In fact, I can now say with a straight face to my wife that the Porsche gets the best gas mileage of all of our cars--it's soooo practical.

Yes, the practical, economical super car. That was working some on my wife until she saw what it cost to fill up with 93 octane last week.

Last year during the gas price jump following hurricane Katrina, I tried driving like a "neutered pig" for about 2 tankfulls. With a healthy mix of highway cruising, back roads, and stop and go in town driving, I was able to go from my usual 18-19 mpg to a whopping 20.5 mpg. Whoohoo. Back on the throttle I went. At least the experiment let me feel better about driving heavy footed.

I always wind up buying a new Porsche when gas prices go skyward! They give the best mileage! My little 914 got up to 34 mpg (520 miles on a tank!) one time,--I ran it dry. My 911s have been worse,--my 911 turbo, when really pushing it (all about 150 mph) and returned 12.4 mpg. Touched 162 mph to get that poor mileage. Have a 997S Cab on order,--I wonder if I can control myself vis-a-vis gas prices? Zuffenhausen,--here I come!

I average 19-20mpg per tankful with a daily commute of fwy and streets. I rev to near redline at green lights, shifting 1, 2, then 4th till the next light. Similarly, I tach out on the onramps, then "putter" at about 70 in 6th gear. It's not only the best therapy ever created, it also keeps the engine "exercised," if you will ...italian style
Agree on the comment above: drive the car; mileage be damned

With the gas prices going the way they are...I just ran a test. I filled the tank on my '99 996 C2 with 91 octane and took a 100 mile drive. The car has 22K miles on it. I zeroed out all the settings, I set the cruise control at 65...and was amazed to see that for the trip, the onboard computer kept climbing and climbing in MPG. When I finally decided to drive it in a more spirited fashion....the onboard computer showed a total of 29.2 MPG. I couldn't believe it and called Alex at Sharkwerks to ask if something was wrong. He had recently put in the GIAC flash, the EVO cool air system, Schnell headers and mufflers...so I don't know if that impacted the MPG. I met up with a friend and had him clock me in his NSX...and we were dead on at 50, 60, 70, and 80 MPH, so the odometer is correct. When I started driving it in a more spirited manner, the MPG dropped to 24.2 on the freeway, and down again to 22.4 for freeway and stop and go city streets. When I drive strictly around town, I get between 20.4 and 21. Hope this might help some folks with estimates. Chuck
