Man, some of you are getting great city mileage. On the highway, I've done 26+ mpg, but typically get about 12-14 mpg around town. Most of the time I'm cruising in 2nd or 3rd, sometimes 4th. Must be those WOT bursts up PCH

Once I drove gently my car to the filling station , with the gauge below zero, but the computer telling me 35 KM left. I filled my tank with 89ltrs in a theoretical capacity of 92liters. Not bad!!! Now I look more to the computer than to the gauge :-)

My long-term average is 11.4 l/100km = 20.6 mpg (US-gall.).

I have never poured in more than 62 l = 16.4 gallons with the orange light on and the needle in the middle of the white field.

Best regards,

Felix

i appreciate all these responses. my book says the tank capacity is 19 gallons/72 litres including 2.6 gallons/10 litres reserve (turbo is 3.9g/15l reserve). optional tank is 24g/92l including 2.6g/10l reserve (turbo 3.1g/12l reserve). so i wonder what reserve is? is reserve considered the fuel you have after the light comes on? so you can go 16.4 before the light comes on?

That is correct. The warning light comes on to tell us that we are down to the reserve volume and better plan for a fill-up soon.

I am considering ordering the 24 gallon tank from Gert. Has anyone done that yet? How difficult is that to install? I'm hesitant to mess with the fuel system as it can be a safety issue.

Thanks for the education.

Great thread. I always panic when the dash lights up fuel. Good to know there is excess.

A few of you really drive 70 mph in 6th gear? I am barely out of 3rd. and into 4th. 6th for me is reserved for . . . well triple digits only. I would think being in 6th at such a speed would casue the car to lug and get worse gas mileage. No?

No, I think the era of fouled and oiled spark plugs is over.

Actually I have obtained mileages such as 8 l/100km by swimming along with traffic at about 50 mph in 6 th (about 30 mpg). Of course, I could be also in 2nd and just about to prepare for shifting into 3rd...

Best regards,

Felix

The engines are fine above 2000rpm while cruising, and 70mph with USA gears will get you about 2400 or so. On the other hand, I prefer to cruise at 80mph in 6th, with 5th below that when managing traffic.

A few weeks ago I drove from England to Thun in Switzerland and back - 1700 miles and averaged 29 mpg for the whole trip. Around home I usually get about 25 mpg.

WOW. that's quite impressive- if not unbelievable. i'm also astounded by those who are reporting as much as 450 miles of range! i've never been beyond 350 for a tank (city/highway combined)- and i'm willing to push the envelope. even with strictly highway, 450 seems like loads.

Not possible for me. I too see around 350 for combined town/highway driving. I once drove the car to VIR and back. There is no way I can do the kind of speeds that I would need to stay at to see 450. I saw 375+, but that was when the Left Lane Bandits in PA held me down.....

What the hell am I doing wrong - or right? I get 13 mpg in all suburban driving.

I did get 23-26 mpg on a 1,300 miles roundtrip to AL several months ago - which amazed me given the normal 13 mpg around town.

Also, I once tried to drive totally neutered around town (could only keep that snail pace up for 1/2 tank), but yielded just 20 mpg.

Can lower mpg be indictive of some type of engine inefficiency?

Rob
