Interesting replies, everyone.

I typically cruise at about 3500-4000 (closer to 4000) once I'm warmed up. This is usually on a drive to/from work, so I end up with about 15 minutes of driving at this RPM. This puts me just a 1000 RPM below the wonderful sounds of my Varioram.

Count me with Zombie. If I can't go 80 I leave it in fifth.

The manual says you can cruise at 2000 but anything under about 2900 feels pretty sluggish....as if the engine is choking.

I don't know, in comparison to my old 83 SC these cars have lots of low end grunt so even at 2200+ RPM they pull. I usually keep it at about 3000 in the city, any more then it feels like its going to waste...

This is of course when I actually have a car to drive.... :-(

Cheers,

Mike

Bruce, I agree with you totally. If it's a long cruise with no spirit/fun anticipated then I'll go as low as 2300. Otherwise I like to stay in a range where I will have some power if I want to nail it, 3,000+.

i cruise 3000-3500.
Lugging squishes Rod Bearings, it sounds cool hearing the exhaust at low rpm but it's a sad cold morning when you hear that knock, knock, knock of the Grim Engine Reaper pounding on your door asking for your wallet and your children's
University funds.!
Ask me how I know!

Driving in today I tried out the 3000 range (I'm typically a 4000'er), and missed the ~immediate~ pickup available.

2500 to 2800 on flat roads or slight down hill...also it depends a lot on what is coming up like a hill or traffic to scoot around. I always stick it down a gear to accelerate and never accellerate lower than 2500 even with a light throttle.

Around town 3000 is good for cruising.

Interesting question I've never thought about before. I agree with that Bruce guy on the first page.

Jeff,

That's why you get your TT. Immediate pick-up at any speed in any gear.

Terry and I just did 3k miles in his TT romping over 6 states. Boy what a machine.

I guess I just read the question different than many of you. Loitering is not the same to me as around town stoplight to stoplight or spirited freeway driving. If I'm loitering down the freeway, anticipating a LEO around the next bend, I'm around 2,500 - 2,800 rpm. If I'm snaking my way through traffic, taking advantage of the next gap in the cars next to me it's closer to 4,500 rpm.

Some things in life I dont pay attention to, or think about in better terms, and RPM's in loiter time just happens to be one of those things.
