Kind of like Shawshank Redemption...
Good movie that you didn't want to end!

Congratulations!

I am not sure but it cleared up quickly. It could be the lifters or the pressurization of the tensioners? I did not think it sounded out of line at all and my friend James was listening at the rear but he is not that used to air cooled engines and their sounds. We also we looking for a resonant whistle at about 1800 rpm ; I had it before the rebuild but its more pronounced with the rear deck off and with all the sound echoing off the walls of the garage.

During my test drive I stopped several times to listen to the engine at idle etc. and the valves sounded normal...they are never totally quiet but you have to stick your head close to hear the litlte ticks. I find it hard sometimes to hear and locate specific sounds since these cars are loud even with the stock mufflers...contrary to what some other think

What would be your recommendation on a break-in procedure? When I drove it that night I ran the engine through several different load cycles (power on, power off on downhills, light load, varyin RPM's, etc.) at different speeds...its handy to have an University nearby on top of a mountain that has a nice 4 lane road running around it...its hilly and no traffic at all so it makes a perfect testing ground.

Cheers,

Mike

I think it fired up quickly becuase all the systems were primed the day before because of my mistiming, and I had turned the engine over a few times without the DME to prime the oil pressure...but its still kicked pretty good!

Actually, doing it once, doing it again would be more fun and much, much quicker. I should not have to touch this engine but who knows what other projects I might dig up...how about stuffing a 3.6 into a 550 Spyder kit car? ;-)

No, Noooooo, another slippery slope. I think I need to recover from this rebuild first.

I was on the phone with the body shop, they will start to work on the car on Thursday. First job is to assess the work and test fit the new top. That is the next adventure...how many people can brag that they built their own engine and glued down their Targa top? (probably one... ;-) )

Hey Mike - I see you're listed as a "Rennlist Site Sponsor". Is that new or have I missed it all this time?

That is an old leftover. I was a sponsor years ago and made up some stuff for the 993's but I shut that down way back...I should email John about it but I have been too lazy...

Cheers,

Mike
