Default 18" Narrow Body Hollow Spoke Wheels

Hey All,

I just won the an Ebay auction for these wheels!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=8050148028

I think this was a good deal....

Questions:

1. I'll be exchanging these wheels for 18" technology wheels in chrome. I'm not a big fan of the gray color of my new hollow wheels (especially considering the color of my car), should I have them powdercoated or painted silver?

2. I'd like to reuse my centercaps with painted crests which are currently chrome. Can I have them stripped (after removing the painted crests) and repainted in silver? Is it worth it?

Fortunately I'm local so I can inspect the wheels and pick them up in person. Any "weak" areas I should be on the lookout for?

TIA,
Joe

I bought one wheel from Carlos at Wheel Dynamics. Turned out to be not so nice. I asked to return it to him as it was not what was advertised, he did accept the return. Good guy in the end.

He buys damaged wheels from dealers, refinishes them and then ebay's them. Have a close look at the wheels when you pick them up. Also ask him about returning them if they are not straight. You may wish to mount the wheels bare onto your car and spin them to check for this.

NB hollow spokes are a little tough to come by. If these are straight, you got a pretty good deal!!

Thanks Chris. I figured as much and wouldn't have bought them if I wasn't local. Great idea to try them on first.

Cheers

I had been watching them too, since they were the right offset.

I'm going to pick them up next week. I'm a little concerned about the prior "dings" - hope they've been fixed properly. Anyone have an opinions on paint vs powdercoat? Also, if anyone has a set of painted crests for silver wheels, please let me know.

Cheers
Joe

Powdercoat is substantially more durable than paint. With recessed lug holes, it's really easy to chip the paint when you take lug nuts on/off. So Powdercoating would be preferable. And clear coat the color with clear powdercoat.

You should also know that an easy way to fix a ding or other defect is with surface filler (a type of bondo). It works fine and paints well - but you can't powdercoat it. There are special fillers you need to use with powercoating.

Thanks Don. I just received a quote for $85 per wheel to powdercoat from a place I've used before. The repairs were made on the inside of the wheel, so I'm not too concerned from a cosmetics standpoint since no one will see that portion of the wheel anyway. Is there something else I may be missing?

Thanks,
Joe

Yes, my friend, I've been meaning to get this done I've always thought I've been a good provider of information and advice as well as a taker, so I've dragged my feet on joining. Well, that and an all consuming E30 M3 project I've finally completed. However, now with your write-up on the DIY suspension install, the engine rebuild stuff, and the evaporator DIY, I can see you guys are starting to win the war. Plus I hate recopying my sig every time!

So I'm joining. Just so you all don't think I've been a freeloader all these years, search some of my posts, you'all my find something of use.

Cheers (and here we go again),
Joe

Don Plumley: I've had powdered wheels for 18 years on P-cars and bikes and this is the first I've heard of clearcoat finish. What does it provide over base color? Thanks for any info or insight.
