Default 18" wheel offsets

I had posted earlier that I'm looking for an 18" turbo twist to replace the one that was damaged. Well, surprise- I'm running an aftermarket wheel, that can't be matched (not quite a "twist"). So I started looking here on RL and eBay for the optimum (read cheapest) solution to replace all 4. I'm confused about offsets- e.g., ET52 (or ET 50) front and ET65 (or ET50) rear. I can understand it from an aftermkt/upgrade position, but if I'm just looking for cheap, used OEM wheels for a 993(C4), how will this come into play? I realize that I'm trying to avoid rubbing, but the examples above were taken from 993/996 wheel descriptions.

I hate to sound stupid, but I've never given much thought to the process, until now, when I'm stuck.

Any pointers as to what might/might not work would be appreciated.

thanks!

#1: your question is not stupid!!!

In a NB 993, the offset is ET50 fronts and ET 65 for the rears.

Good luck

Thanks Jean-Pierre. I just hate to seem so lackadaisical about the whole wheel porcess, since I was happy with the ones I had. I could just easily go to Tire Rack and order my replacement tires, etc.

Now that I can't just swap out a wheel, I have to find a set of used ones that work.

cheers,

Just to add, under certain conditions you can get away with rear offsets that are less than 65. For example, you can run ET54 if you stick with 265 tires and don't lower your car too much. Here's how I view it: 285 rear tires are about the widest you can go with proper offsets (ET65) on a lowered car without rubbing on the outside. So if your wheels are ET60, then you could only run 275 tires. You get the idea. Plus, another 1deg of neg camber will save you 5mm.

Here are the NB offsets and part numbers for the hollow spoke wheels:

Hollow spoke "Technology" wheels:
8 x 18 - 993.362.136.00 - ET52 - 19.95 lb (front)
10 x 18 - 993.362.140.01 - ET65 - 23.36 lb (narrow body rear)

Eric,
I'm a little confused, since my tires are 265/35/18 in the rear, and 225/40/18 in front.
thanks,

thanks,
So what I'm saying is that you could probably get wheels with a rear ET55 mm and still be able to run 265 tires on a mildly-lowered car. It might be close, but you should be able to get away with it. But again, you want ET65 if possible.

I hope that helps.

people get away with putting boxster wheels on their 993 (heck, I've done it before myself) but other people (I'd guess based on suspension and camber) say they rub if they try to put back boxster wheels on their 993.

I met a guy who put 45mm offset 996 turbo wheels on his NA 993 -- wheels stuck out a little in back for 'poke' but he was at stock ride height and could get away with it.. I didn't care for the look but each to their own.

thanks,
I'm sure Eric meant to type "285" and "275", unless he is trying to put you on 356 wheels/tires!

I've got a set of RH AG Cup wheels in near perfect condition that I'll sell for $1000 plus shipping from Idaho. They came off my 96 NB Coupe. The offsets are front 45mm and rear 54mm. PM me and I can send pictures if you're interested.

Rob,
Thanks for the offer, but I was looking for 52/65 offsets. I've also been searching for (one) Cup replica to replace the broken wheel (now that I know what it's called). I've looked all over and can only find 16 and 17 inch versions, instead of the 18 that I need. Why have these become so rare?
If anybody knows of one p[lease let me know. I'll post on the "wanted" board as well.
thanks!

Bill- FYI, Rob's wheels (RH Cup AG) will indeed fit narrow body cars, despite the offsets. I ran these on my prior 993. The only real drawback is you're limited to 265 rear tires, which is the recommended size anyways. And you might have a problem if you lower dramatically, but it's not a certainty. My current Speedlines are also ET54 IIRC. The Cup AG are gorgeous and $1000 is a good price FWIW.
