Default painting my car...maybe

i think i might be painting my car when is comes out of storage, here's the plan:

i have a black/black '95 and i want to paint it FLAT black. maybe the word i'm looking for is SATIN??? i have seen on a couple 911s and cayennes recently and i think it looks really cool. i think it would would very aggressive with the MY'02 wheels painted to match, the big reds standing out and matching the red seat belts. the car already has the pss9 setup, so it looks aggressive now, but i think these mods will make it look very "darth vader-ish".

thoughts?

i have already thought about the resale aspect of this mod and am not too worried about it. i bought this car to keep and add to my "collection" (yeah, like 2 cars make a collection).

i have seen a 993 turbo painted flat (or satin) olive in europe and have a pic of a simiarly painted cayenne if anyone is intetested.

thanks for your comments in advance.

If you are not worried about reselling the car, then why not... it is your car to enjoy. I have never seen a "satin" finish on a car other then "rat rods". Please post up those pics you have.

Sounds very cool!

Definetly paint it with "flat" rather than "satin".

Please post the pics so we can get a better idea of what your going for. As far as resale, I don't think it would not help.

Leave the danged thing alone, will ya? Why ruin a good thing?

(You could always leave it out in the weather and just let the paint age and fade - be a lot cheaper and get the same result)

I have seen satin and flat paints on show cars aimed at the younger crowd. It might have been in Autoweek where they review what trends are in store for the future. It might be a few years out but the kids that are modding the boxy Scions and the like are the leading edge. Not for everybody right now.

OTOH, I have seen a couple of pics of 993s or 996s with flat paint and they look real mean. The Olive Drab (OD) is wicked looking!

I think you should go for it for similar reasons mentioned above...It's your car and you should have it look the way you want, etc, re-sale value be darned. I have already had thoughts of painting the car I finally found the color I ideally wanted (I opted to buy the most mechanically sound car I could find and color became a secondary consideration) at some point down the line.

I actually have a question for you, and others interested in this thread...what does a factory quality re-paint cost?

Factory quality repaint... do you mean with the car taken down to the shell? I have not been quoted for a 993, but for a '72 2002 you are looking over $10k and that is with me doing much of the prep work.

We had a guy in our area who ran a flat black 930 on the street and track (moved to New England). Everyone was always saying something like "mean looking car in that primer...when does the paint go on???".

Hey, it is your car...ENJOY!

How does one maintain the paint? Are there satin paints now that allow waxing? I presume a flat paint would be ruined by the application of wax.

Just wet sand the car completely with 1000 grit. Then, when its time to sell, buff it

Where's our Phlat Black Guru???

Also, wasn't RUF's "NATO" 930 painted in a non-shiny finish? No images on google...

I'm not entirely sure since I would have to see it in person, but I think a satin or flat finish in black would be bad-***. Good luck with resale, though.
