I was on the highway this morning doing an indicated 65mph when I was stopped by Johnny Law. He told me he got me on continuous same lane radar doing between 80 and 85mph.
Is my speedo that far off? That just doesn't seem right to me.
Thoughts?

My digital speedo is darn near dead-nuts on. Analog reads less than 5% high. Very unusual for ANY US P-car speedo to read low, much less 20-25% low. What gear/rpm were you doing at the time?

I wouldnt be suprised if its BS. Seems like anything can be said to save face. If you actually got a ticket I would follow-up, if it was a "warning" it was BS...

I checked my analog speedometer in my '96 with my GPS when I first bought my car. It is DEAD ON. The GPS and the analog speedo read the exact same speed from 20-90 mph.. If you are running OEM spec tires/wheels, I would be suprised if your speedo is off more than 5mph.

You just got a Yellow Porsche ticket. Write down the incident as it happened, and record the RPM and gear in which you were driving. Take that data, along with the gear/final drive ratios (preferably faxed from your local Porsche dealer, on letterhead), and calculate your actual speed. Your speedo could be off, but the gear ratios won't lie. Then take all that to court.
Make sure to explain that you were paying close attention to your speed, as you always do, and that your first concern was that your speedometer was innacurate, not that the officer made an error. Then explain how you calculated your actual speed, and that you did a follow-up road test to confirm, and gently suggest that the officer may have been mistaken. Good luck!

I agree.
If you got a warning it was BS. I got pulled on the second day I had my car and he said I was going much faster than I was. He gave me a warning and said "nice porsche" My guess is he just wanted to see your car.

I was in fourth gear because I knew he was back there. I watched him get on the highway and adjusted my speed accordingly. He was way behind me for a little bit, then came flying up on me. I signaled to change lanes, and he lit me up. As soon as the car was stopped, I shut it off (to avoid any loud exhaust hastle).
I did not get a ticket.

CHP was trying to pace me but I adjusted speed accordingly (with the e-brake - dont try this at home). I was already slowing down before he got up to speed. He let me go with a fix-it plate ticket and a warning. I think he was pissed that he could not pace me. He did mention that I obviously was checking my mirrors cause I adjusted speed...
The ticket should say what method that the speed was registered....

Is your speedo that far off? You went to high school; you ought to have enough basic math skills to do a test. Get a stopwatch and go for a drive. Get on an interstate with marked miles while doing exactly 60 MPH. Start the stopwatch at one mile marker, stop it at the mext mile marker. 60MPH is one mile a minute, so if your speedo is accurate it should take you exactly 60 seconds to travel the mile at 60MPH. Every second faster or slower is pretty closely one MPH off.
Hard, isn't it?

My reg speedo is off. It registers low when compared to the digital one on the computer. While I had my speedo out or the odo repair I thought I had "adjusted" it appropriately but I guess not.

Huh?
Just kidding...I'm prety confident that it wasn't my speedometer that was off.
