Hi Everyone,
Having frequented this forum for several months now I feel like I know most of you and that you are old friends.
As I'm struggling right now to get back to my target weight and into great physical condition, I wondered what others here do to keep in shape.
I'm in my mid forties (ok, mid to late forties) and could stand to loose about 15 more pounds. I practice a ten minute morning workout (push-ups, crunches, etc) and I keep my calories at 2000 per day. With this routine I have lost about 6 pounds in the last month. I previously followed this routine for about 4 years and maintained target body weight and a nice level of fitness with no problems. I stopped counting calories and before I knew it I had gained 20 pounds.
I'd love to know what experience others here have had regarding fitness.
By the way, getting my 993 back in October has definitely encouraged me to get back into shape :-)

1) Diet - Skip desserts and don't eat excessive carbs (bread, potatoes, etc.). Stick with fish & chicken. If you get a craving for something eat it ... but in small portions. If you deprive yourself you will end up binging.
2) Cardio - Run, walk, etc at least 3 times a week for 30-45 minutes
3) Weights - Again 3 times a week
3) Sleep - Get at least 7-8 hours

I agree with Harvey except I use my VersaClimber to burn calories. Last year between Jan 1 and March 31st I went from 178 lbs to 161 lbs (I am 5' 9") by cutting out excessive fat and alcohol and working out 5 days a week using VersaClimber (30-45 minutes), light weight reps (10-15lbs) for arms and chest, combine with sets of sit ups and push ups.

I run 3 miles (21:00 min - not a competative time but not slow either) 5-6 times a week. Lost 15 lbs last summer doing this and not altering my diet or beer/wine consumption. But as my 30's come to a close, I am sure that I will have to alter the diet as well to maintain my weight along with the running.

1st rule is not to confuse fitness and weight - muscle is heavier than fat.
If your goal is to burn fat, low intensity exercise is key - 60 mins walking on treadmill or using an eliptical trainer / exercise bike will work best, keep your heart rate about 115-120 or so (this is a guess taking your age into account). Do this 3 times a week, with 2 times added of higher intensity cardio (heart rate 130-135, again, a guess) to help get your blood flowing and increase your metabolism.
If you want to do weights, but haven't done so for a while, I'd suggest consulting a personal trainer for a few sessions to get back into it.

if anyone is looking for a really intense workout i highly recommend yoga, and i particularly recommend bikram yoga. a bikram yoga class is not a class in transcendental meditaion where you will attempt to levitate off the ground; it is a 90 minute *** kicking session that consists of 26 postures (asanas), and two breathing exercises in a heated room (i prefer the room >110 degrees and 50% humidity). during a really good class i will drop 10 lbs of sweat. the only thing harder is college football double session in the MN summer, and since i don't play football anymore that is not an option!
