Somehow, I had inherited my wife's 2004 Honda Accord as my daily driver. While it is completely practical transportation to take the kids to school and park in parking lots while running errands and back and forth to the office, it is also completely boring.
If I am a good boy, for my birthday, my wife may allow me to trade this in on something a little more exciting!
I am thinking something in the $30k - $35k range so I won't be so paranoid about using it for everything I need it for. Other parameters, must have a manual transmission, needs 4 doors and a decent trunk. Late model pre-owned is fine. No boy racer stuff (STI or Evo IX) since that is what the p-car is all about.
I was thinking 2003 BMW 530 or 540.
What are your thoughts and suggestions?

Mercedes E55 (yes I know it is an auto) but it is a great ride. My current DD is a 03 CL55.

If excessive maintenance costs are not a problem, I'm with Reynard38, 2000-2001 BMW M5. Test drive one of these along with your other choices and feel the difference...

How about something American.... like a low miles 82 Plymouth Reliant? Comfortable, economical, and those classic K-car lines

BMW's are like tanks compared to Audi's -- Try a nice agile powerful A6 V8 or S4 - Keep it German despite the allure of the American car above

Have you thought about a pickup with a supercab? Hauls people and stuff.
While not the same as your daily driver question, when we retire or the next time I get laid off, we'll move to the Maryland eastern shore area (been looking at Chestertown Md area), with a plan to have the 993 for fun, a good gas mileage hatchback for my wife, and a 4wd truck like a Ford Ranger to haul stuff and deal with the snow.

Pcar 964 - I had one of those as a company car - I called it the gut-less wonder, when you pushed the pedal to the floor - it made lots of noise but did'nt accelerate.

Hal,
I went with the e39 BMW 528 as the daily ride. It saves on gas and you get a nice comfortable ride and it is less then your target price range. If you really want bang for your buck and you are ok with something older (1996/97), get the BMW e36 M3 in the 4 door.
