I flew to Portland this week and drove home to SF in my new old Porsche - a Glacier White 97 C4S.
I found the car on Rennlist advertised by simpateko. Jeff is a top notch guy and was very patient throughout the purchase process. I had some questions about the history of the car, and Jeff retraced all the owner and service history fo me. The car has actually been advertised for a while but for some reason it didn't go. Probably because of the holiday season plus Jeff was not very keen on getting rid of it, nor was he willing to discount the car much. I think I lucked out and came at the right time.
The car has 51K miles, prestine interior and exterior, PPI was good except from a couple of small things. Most interestingly, it had tons of mods installed and tuned by the infamous Jeff Gamroth of Rothsport in Portland (not the same Jeff who sold me the car). Jeff Gamroth is the crew chief of Alex Job.
The price was pretty fair too - I think. And Jeff Gamroth's shop has installed more than $20K of mods less than 2000 miles ago. Jeff did it for the previous owner as a high performance street car.
With all the performance mods done to the car, I was concerned if the car has been raced or tracked much. I have been active in another forum for a while. A friend in that forum (Grant) knows Steve Weiner. Steve even talked to a few local people and said that the car hasn't been tracked. I talked to Jeff Gamroth also, who very patiently explained to me about the mods, and said that the pervious owner built the car as a nice performing street car and not for track.
Anyway, here's how the car is equipped:
- Motor sound package
- Regeared tranny (custom close ratio gear selected by Rothsport)
- RS Short shift, clutch, Lightweight flywheel, strutbars and sways
- GIAC chip (Steve Weiner's programing)
- Bilstein PSS9
- V1 hardwired
- 3 spoke 996 steering wheel
The car drives very well. After 2 years of driving a Honda S2K as a daily driver, it is nice to have that torque again. The car pulls just as strong, or may be even stronger than my MY02 996 in certain range. Must have something to do with Steve's software. It also felt more sure footed and less floaty, probably because of the AWD. Pretty good turn in, not as good as the C2 with ROW030 - probably because of the front weight AWD too? I really like the PSS9. The steering feel was excellent - I like the less boost compared to 996.
A couple of things I don't like: First, the Motor Sound Package (equivalent of Porsche Sport Exhaust plus an air box with holes) is not very loud compared to the 996 Sport Exhaust. I am already shopping for a muffler upgrade. Second, the footrest is very high. It is impossible to stretch my left leg. My left knee was hurting after 2 days of 8 hour twistie driving. Heel-toe takes some getting used to, but I think heel-toe is actually easier than the 996. I also had to get used to the lightweght flywheel since it revs up so quickly.
Anyway, here are some pics. The guy in the first pic is Jeff Gamroth. Really nice guy, knows his stuff, and very impressive shop! The way he tuned my C4S, he really had found a nice balance between performance and dialy driving livability. The RS clutch is not too difficult to drive, and the PSS9 has just the right firmness (6 fonrt, and 5 back I believe) considering I need to drive around San Francisco's streets.
Finally, the drive from Portland to SF is just fantastic! Perfect for getting to know my new 993.

Very nice, congratulations. I flew into Portland and drove my new used '96 Midnight Blue C4S to Southern California in December. What a great way to get to know your new car.
Happy Driving,
Mark
