Default Running Lights? Canadians?

Can anyone tell me what is involved converting a US car into a Canadian car with running lights? I've been quoted $250 but would still like to know exactly what they are doing to the car?

I had the daytime running lights and the federal inspection done at CDN Tire for around $100....I know...it sounds sacriligious to take a 911 to crappy tire for service, but for some unknown reason, CDN Tire stores are authorized and recommended to do the federal inspections and thet have decent experience at doing the driving light conversion as well. I'm sure most dealerships will do the conversion , but they tend to charge alot more. I also talked to the tech. about the conversion and he said it was a piece of cake.

When I imported my 993 to Canada I had the local Porsche dealer do daytime light setup, but they did charge way too much... Canadian Tire did my SUV and I had to take it back twice because the lights kept flickering... the "mechanic" didn't know what he was doing due to their ****ty job.

I wouldn't let Canadian Tire near my 993!

err, my '96 (which was purchased new in Calgary) does not have any lights that come on automagically when you start the car. The low beams and the driving lights (2 pairs) only come on when you turn the switch on. Is that normal? Am I mistaken about that?

Don - 993 in PEI - WAY COOL! I am originally from Antigonish and my gf is from Charlottetown.

You may not be mistaken, but I don't think it's normal. DRLs are mandated for Canadian cars starting in 1990, so if yours doesn't have 'em, that's odd. On the 964s, the foglights act as DRLs, on "automagically" just after startup. I assumed the 993s were the same...maybe you're shy a relay? There's one specific to this function in the 964s...

You need Relay R63 for DRL . Fits in fuse/relay box under the hood, RH side near the screen.I dont know what they cost but it is a 2 minute job to fit !!

Good luck

Open luggage compartment. Open fuse/relay box. Insert relay. Check DRLs work. Close fuse/relay box. Close luggage compartment.

Forty bucks is probably book rate for 1/3 of an hour. Maybe a minimum charge. Who knows? That's the Porsche premium...

I still haven't checked this out. Should the 993 DRL be the fogs or the low beams on the main headlights? I guess I should be able to check without actually starting the car. Thanks for the relay info, I'll look at that.

Will the R63 also work on the 993? Any more specific install instructions? On pelican parts the listed part # is relay # 431.951.253.G for the 964

Red Rooster - is relay R63 for the 964 or the 993 or both? I need to make this modification also.
Let me know if you can. The Porsche dealer in Toronto told me it had to be wired...

For me it was $300 at Cdn tire to install the necessary relays to autostart the main headlights (my choice over the fogs for the reasons noted below), put a child seat anchor in the glove compartment (has to be in the car but not installed :-)), put a french language warning label re the airbags on the sun visor (later removed), and then do all the paper work and fax it to the Canadian Registrar of Imported vehicles. It was going to be more than double this at any Porsche mechanic, and Cdn Tire did a good job to relay it properly rather than just 'hot-wire' it at the fuse box.

I later installed an in-line switch in the blank position so that I have control over this function, so that it does not come on before startup, and so that I can choose to run the main lights or the fogs.
