If you answered yes, tell us about what mileage the problem occured at, what your oil consumption was, your driving style and climate.

Not sure on mileage, as they were apparently clogged already when I got the car at 80k miles
Oil consumption about 1 qt. per 800 miles
Texas car, always in the heat
Daily driver
Top end rebuilt at 100k

No...
But I think that the real question for the poll should be if you have gotten the SAI CEL.. I don't know if mine are partially clogged or wide open...but no CEL as of yet....planning on changing the Check valve at the 50K miles service and do a SAI flush soon.

thanks Paul
Paul...thanks for creating this thread....
just a thought of mine about this issue....
we should keep in mind that there are many 96-98 993 owners who are less enthusiastic than us and are NOT Rennlisters. These folks will not be voting although many may have already paid their dues.

Wasn't this poll, or similar, done last year? Or maybe it was a valve guide poll....wheich IIRC ended up under 10% of respondents.
Anyway, CEL light for other problems, but never for SAI on two 993s with approx 40k miles...one 80% track. However, I have had two different shops (different cars) tell me that it "is the dreaded SAI problem, they all have it", only to prove BOTH wrong.

Threw CEL with SAI code at 65K miles. 1 quart every 2500 miles, so no real oil burning issues. Planning on the DIY flush sometime this month to see what's really going on.
Edit-- Oh, also. Car has spent life in Georgia and Tennesse, and I had just yaked the engine pan off during my first DIY oil change just after it threw the CEL.

My 1996 C4S gave its first indication at around 65,000 mi. By 70,000 mi, the light will turn back on in a matter of days. The car is a daily driver but sees redline from time to time. Oil consumption is around 1 qt per 1200 mi. Let's share quotes on the valve guide job.

40K miles
less than 1 qt/2000 mi
plenty of trips to redline (although I can't vouch for the PO) and very little in-town dawdling
climate is pleasant in summer (75-85F) with moderate humidity, nasty cold in winter but the car stays in the heated garage
SAI valve was corroded and not functioning properly

No SAI CEL yet - but having said so guarantees the light illuminating tomorrow! At 58k miles, and I do not drive to redline (yeah, I know, no fun), and what I do drive is mostly suburban driving. No idea of PO(s) driving habits, but I do not think the car was tracked. Oil consumption is about 1 qt / 2000 miles. I have not yet checked my SAI valve, but will at the first opportunity!
