My buddy has a '95 911 with approximately 40K on the car and for the last year has had the car in the shop more than at home.
The problem is an engine sensor that keeps tripping the check light on the dash. He has had the O2 sensors replaced several times to no avail. The only thing that worked for more than a few days was to have the intake valves/intake tract flushed and cleaned. This kept the sensor happy for about a month and allowed the car to pass smog here in CA. If the light does not go out after initial start it is an automatic failure.
The dealer wants to do a top end on the car as they claim this is the only cure for this problem which they say is due to excessive carbon build up. Say it isn't so.....
Any ideas from the learned group?
Thanks in advance.

What is the code?
The top end job for carbon build up may be required for MY96 and up cars due to the SAI ports required on ODBII cars. MY95 are ODBI.
Get the code from him if you can.

If it's really a '95 (you sure you aren't mistaken?), then OBDI doesn't even monitor the SAI ports to throw a fault. You have to get the specific fault code and work from there.

It is OBD1, You can also use the referee station at the emission centers as Your car is old enough now. Also sounds like You need a different shop. If the car is not using excessive oil, ie a qt or more every 600 miles, do not let anyone touch it.

Glen is right. If his shop is recommending a top end job to clean the SAI passages on an OBDI car, then they are complete buffoons. OBDI cars (i.e. 1995 911's) don't detect SAI problems.
At any rate you'll want to go to the referree station. Do a search on "referee" to learn more.

Still awaiting the fault codes from my buddy. I told him about this thread as he is internet challenged and asked if he is sure it is a '95. Now he is not sure. Thinks it may be a '96. I'm gonna see the car in person Friday night and get the VIN and make sure along with the actual code(s).
Thanks again for all the suggestions.

When you check the VIN, look at the 10th digit. "S"=MY '95........."T"=MY '96.
If it is in fact a '96 and has the SAI error codes (P0410,P1441)and his oil consumption is o.k., then he could probably have the SAI port clean out done (or DIY). Mine was flushed about 6K miles ago, and everything is great. Others on the board have also had great soccess with it. Tell your friend not to get discouraged. This can be fixed one way or another.
