Hello all, I need to find a used DME (engine control unit), so that I can scavenge the harness plug for a project I’m working on. My car is a 1995, but I believe all years used the same harness plug connector, is this correct?

Also, I have checked with some of the salvage yards, and haven’t really found too much yet. Any suggestions on a good place to find an inexpensive one? If anybody has one lying around, even if it doesn't function correctly, I would be glad to take it off their hands as long as the harness plug is in good shape.

In Europe you can buy the 55pin male connector from Bosch . Have a look for an aftermarket engine management system that uses the same plug or look for an old BMW ECU 0261 200 173 , E30 325 , which uses the same connector.

i believe that you can also use the 944 part (i think my first dme was a 944 part)

95 is different than 96-98 US, although the Euro 993 always used the 55 pin connector. They did change pin locations to prevent people using Euro DME in US spec 55pin cars...unless You repin then You can run a Euro DME in a US car but only a 95...

Any idea what years/models used the 55 pin DME plug? 944s are pretty easy to find around here, I checked out an 84 last night which of course did not have the correct plug. Thanks.

the reason i think (and i could be wrong) that the 993 used the 944 DME is because my original DME (which came with the car in 12-1995) had a part # that began "944" (the whole # is: 944.615.227.00)

993 ECUs have part number starting 993.618 . Dont know what the 944 part number was for but it wasnt to run the motor !

I'm a transplanted canadian living in western Massachusetts (different Berkshires in the USA - even more podunk than where your at) so I'd say the weather is kinda warm down here. How did you end up in Halifax? Nobody moves to Halifax.

The cheapest place (in the USA) to look for a 55-pin DME connector might be a BMW parts wrecker. The 3-series from 1988-1993 and (i think) the 5, 6 & 7 series from 1987 - 1994 used a 55-pin connector. Are you building a break-out box?

I am a Brit who moved to Halifax ! Quality of life is about the best Ive found anywhere.
I guess if you need 8 lane highways and high density living, this is not the place!

Jason, thanks for the info.

I'm building a harness adaptor. The car is getting an AEM standalone ECU, and I am not a big fan of hacking the factory wiring harness. So It will have the factory plug on one end (scavenged from the junkyard ecu), and the plug for the AEM on the other end. This way, I maintain an unmolested factory harness with all the factory plugs/sensors, and I can still plug back in the stock ecu anytime I need to. Here is an example of one for a different car:

As both Jason and I have suggested, a 1988 on BMW 3/5/7 series ECU uses the same 55 pin connector.
The manufacturer is AMP , but I cant find my AMP book to give you a part number!! Doughhhhhhhhhhhh .

Maybe a bit of web gazing is called for.

Thanks Geoff, I just managed to find a 55 pin DME from an 89 944 S2 for a pretty good price. The seller sent me some pictures and it looks to be dead on. If it's not correct when it arrives next week I'll look through some of those BMW's.
