Got the harness replaced today.
I know this an old topic for most of you but I just saw the remains of my original wiring harness (1995 with 150,000 miles). I have owned the car for less than a month. Around the area of the alternator the wiring harness had been spliced together with electrical tape/duct tape…several times.
The Tech doing the work said I sure needed the work done. He also thought the car was a very solid car, he saw no engine leaks. I was also complemented on how straight the car was for its age and mileage.
The tech went on to say that he thought the 993 engine was the best engine built by Porsche and that I should have many more miles left on the car. He was not concerned with how the engine sounded when it was running.
All good things a rookie Porsche owner wants to hear during his first service visit!

Mine was replaced last year and had no significant rub thru's or cracks after it was inspected, but what the heck, if Porsche will pay for it, why not replace it!

The 993s in general are a great motor compared to previous models. Yes the CEL for the SAI is annoying, but it is caused by a problem that plagues the other 911s it is just that technology caught up to the problem. If you look at a similar mileage 964 to a 993, in most cases you will see a very different car / engine. 993s are tight (yes again in comparison), well built, strong, and last a long time. See given 40 or so years, any auto manufacturer can get it right.

Yes...only for the YM 1995 cars...the dealer got my Cab for a full week in order to perform the service...it made me anxious considering all the water cooled only trained, 22 years old, recently graduated mechanics with no much experience with our cars...lucky me everything went fine… I prefer to keep my car away from the dealer though...

ENTROPY,
I know you asked Pedro but what I did was call the local Porsche dealer and gave them my VIN number. They said it had the open recall and we made an appointment. It is no cost. I was made aware of the matter from the Carfax report I got when considering my purchase of the car.
BTW, the dealer reported the oil pressure sender had failed. They quoted $425 to replace. A local Porsche mechanic quoted less than $200. What should I do! j/k.

Hi Dan...I took my car to "Champion Porsche" in Pompano Beach...the other option would be "The Collection" at Coral Gables...I would not do that!!!!I had no problems whatsoever with Champion but they are pretty busy and don't expect to get your car back next day...

I figured on Champion. Richard Danvers has worked on my '89 911, but he cannot do the recall. I have only heard bad things about the collection. Personally, there are very few things that I would take my car to the dealership for. An oil pressure sender for $425! If that keeps up, I am going to quit the practice of law in favor of turning wrenches. Actually, doesn't sound like a bad idea anyway. Thanks for the input.

Pcar964 quoted:
"993 is strong car, but not any better than the early cars. imho"
Based on my experience with the early P-cars I've owned, I have to disagree
But then again, that's the best thing about opinions, just like a-holes, everyone has one

I would never take my car to Champion again. I had two horrible experiences there.
JCM John 954 7710435 excellent service at decent prices or
Gulf Performance Vince 954 7837345 also great place to take your 993 if you are in the Fort Lauderdale area. Both these shops are very familiar with the 993. Champion has no mechanics who know these cars according to their service manager. I did my harness there during the recall and it ended up costing me over $2000 after they shorted the alternator and also charged me for a new fan because they broke the bearing trying to get it off with a hammer. When I got the car back, the oil pressure was reading all the way to the top, after many attempts to get them to correct it, I gave up. There was nothing wrong with my car when I brought it in.
Champion Sucks Big time, stay away. Chris
