Default Old Yeller is finally ready for sanding

Finally got done with taping the car off. I am now ready to sand the car dry with a DA using 1500 grit. After the 1500 grit I will wet sand and proceed to buff it out. I will post more pics as the process begins after lunch.

What an ambitious project. Why aren't you removing the stoneguard and do under there and then reapply?

Arena993,

As long as you've gone this far, you should either:
a). paint the car Arena Red
b). change your screen name.

Just kidding..... i'm looking forward to your progress reports although I guess this technique wouldn't work on a clear-coated car?

Kinda wondering the same as Bob. You really should remove the stoneguards as well. They are not a big deal to replace.

The stone guards are brand new and I have removed these before. What a PITA. The PO just put them on a week before I bought the car. I guess I could, but hate doing more work than required. I an not doing the decklid or front bumper either because I have the TT tail and the TT bumper as well as the euro sideskirts at the paint shop. I should of taken pics of the inside I just installed the RS Shifter from Gert. It looks pretty cool.

Ca993twin: My screen name is Arena993 because I sold my 98 Arena Red Cab before I found Old Yeller

Ca993twin:

The sanding process works better on clearcoat cars. I did my Arena Red cab and the finish was awesome.

Are you just trying to polish or in fact are you prepping the surface for repaint? If only for a good polish I would concentrate on cutting back only with various degrees of grit polishes using the proper machinery for auto polishing. Stay away from wet and dry and especially dry sand papers. Remember its not paint that you cut back, but in fact clear varnish. One mistake and you’re through it and into the 2 coats of paint and then primers! Big trouble my friend if you do that... If I can help you let me know. On my site at cardomain I show some paintwork detailing after the repaint. Remember this is a round edged Porsche and not a flat table top for the garden...
Marc

PS Yes! Based on your pics, you show nothing that spells, "repaint" but in fact it is taped up for "polishing"... Are we April the FIRST today?...

OK, stupid ? here. Your using 1500 grit, then buffing to bring back out the shine. Other than having to be very good at not burning the paint using sand paper, causing serious damage....is this the best way to bring back a great shine or something. Can this even be attempted on a dark car, just wondering.

Marc A:
The car is being polished not repainted.

I use the trizact system and have used it 100 times before. I am very qulaified to use the system. the premise behind using 1500 is to "flatten" the paint. the 3000 wet is to pull the 1500 scratches out. Old Yeller is single stage paint not clearcoat. You only remove a small fraction of paint doing this process.

Tom:

This can be done on any car. Buffing is not that hard. I have been doing it for 15 years. I did a Ferrari 360 Modena with this system. You want to remove any dirt and surface imperfections is why you sand the car. I am going to follow up with pics. People are always afaraid when you mention sanding a car. Paper especially the 3000 grit is so fine you have to try and go through the paint.

Just wait for my next series of pics and you will see the process. Beleive me I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't know what the heck I was doing.

I stand to be corrected but, in Germany the paint process changed in 1990. However that's not important. When you rub compound polish with a rag on your yellow paint, what does it show? Old oxidized yellow paint or grey surface dirt. "That will answer the varnish question". The rest is in your hands. Remember that the paint finish on a Porsche is in fact Orange Peeled and not flat like that of a mirror. From a stranger far away who also is a painter, pls be careful... Take care, Marc.

Arena, good luck! If you really know what to do, that's the most important issue here. Keep me and others informed, maybe you're on to something. But again don't sneeze while sanding...
Chris, I was wrong if what you say is right? BTW, what colour is your 911/993? Until tomorrow, good night America...
Marc.

Marc -

There are a number of colors on 993s that are single stage. In sum, it varies.
